Transdermal HRT

Posted by vkmov @vkmov, Oct 19, 2023

Many studies have found that transdermal HRT protects and builds bone without all the horrific side effects of many first-line osteoporosis treatments. The patch bypasses the liver and thereby avoids the risks of breast cancer, strokes, etc. Has anyone explored this or discussed it with their doctors?

@teb thank you so much for the response. If you are looking for lab tests such as the P1NP, I found a place called Ulta Lab Tests where you can purchase just about any test yourself. They match you up with a local lab for the blood draw. I am actually having this done later this week. Of course you have to pay for them yourself and also interpret the results yourself unless you want to take them to your specialist. I'm inspired by your workout regimen - I'll have to up my game. Thanks again.

@karhma34 , @teb , this link discussed bone marker ctx/p1np lab with self pay:

It might be a bit cheaper than ulta lab.

You can also ask any other doctors whom you see to place the lab order. My insurance paid the labs regardless who ordered it, FYI. I understand insurance policy may differ.

Stay with same place for bone marker testing could be important (Quest, or Labcorp) since different types of assays used by different places could make results non-comparable.

Thanks for that info. I have an appt with my functional medicine doc so I'll see if she'll order it. If not, that's something to consider. Thanks!

Thanks @gravity3. I hope it's working for you. It looks like I may have to find a functional medicine provider if my PCP decides not to help. My endocrinologists are against it.

@drsuefowler I am 74 and on HRT for the first time. My PCP sent me to a gynecologist for the HRT.

May I ask what you've been prescribed?

I am 71 and 16 years post menopause and am seriously considering HRT. I met with my cardiologist yesterday and he was neutral. I am seeing an osteoporosis specialist and I had planned to ask her at my appointment next week (but my appointment was canceled by her office and I may not get in until January). I have an appointment with gyn in 2 weeks to discuss with her.

@pennykj are you still here?

I realize your post was 2 years ago. Just wondering the results of your HRT journey? I'm currently the same 16 yrs post menopause and considering the same.

Two years ago, my gyn strongly recommended against starting HRT at my age (now 73). I listened and did not start HRT. Instead, I have concentrated more on diet and exercise. I drink organic unsweetened soy milk daily for the little bit of estrogen it provides. My dexa numbers have remained stable and I have not fractured anything.

Thanks for the update. Two years ago for me my gyn advised against it also. However, she was willing to consider it if my endo agreed to it. (I'm seeing an endo for osteoporosis.) Well both my endo and PCP are pointing me to the gyn. I think everyone is side stepping because of the WHI study. So I've started requesting tests for my own benefit even if I need to pay for them. I've since done a CAC (cornary artery calcium) test which showed 0 plaque build up. My PCP is doing cholesterol and apoB test in March. My plan was to go back to my gyn next year for another discussion. I'm looking at HRT for all the benefits not just osteoporosis e.g., cardi, cholesterol, sleep, dementia, etc. Honestly I'm not sure if I want to go down the HRT route or not. I'm just trying to have a benefit/risk conversation with my dr's. In the meantime I'm laser focused on diet and exercise for my osteoporosis.

@gravity3 I am finishing the first month of Combipatch 0,05/0.25 DIS (NV)#8. My cost was $135. I have BC/BS insurance. I have asked on this site how to get it for less. So far, my side effects are redness from the patch glue and breast tenderness. All tolerable.
