I got fitted for hearing aids in Austria 🇦🇹. They do seem to help, but not as much as I would have thought based on the severity of my hearing loss. I do not always notice a big difference between using them vs. not.

I was surprised to learn that the development of dementia is correlated with hearing loss.

@sdscotti I’m not familiar with the health care system in Austria. Were you fitted for hearing aids by an audiologist? Can you look at your audiogram and share the results? For instance, is your hearing loss in the 1000-4000 cycles per second (or k) frequency range which are the frequencies we need in order to hear and understand speech?

There does seem to be ample evidence that dementia is correlated with hearing loss - the key word being “correlated” as in “associated” with hearing loss. I’m thinking that there is no data as yet that shows that hearing loss causes dementia. I think about the correlation this way. If a person is having more and more difficulty with hearing then they become isolated from conversational speech and aren’t getting the input and stimulation needed for memory function in an aging brain. You’ve now encouraged me to look for any recent studies on this topic.
