3rd knee replacement in a year and a half on same knee

Posted by mollymay @mollymay, Feb 20 6:09am

I had a total knee replacement in May 2023, with pain and swelling and was unstable. Surgeon said I had to have a revised knee surgery 6 months after the first in. He told me that he didn't put the cement in the bone for the implant to be stable. After the second replacement I continue to have pain and swelling he told me that all x-rays looked good. I have been to 6 different rehabs for therapy with no results. 4 weeks ago He said that I needed to have the spacer replaced because he put the smallest one in and it needed to be higher. I am still having pain and swelling. Now I don't know what to do. I am a 65 year old female that was active be for the first knee surgery, now it hurts to stand from a setting position and feels like a tight band around my knee. If you have any information that will help I will greatly appreciate it.

2nd opinion? Sounds really messed up. Too many variables we do not know. Best wishes.

Pain upon standing and tight band feeling around knee are typical symptoms following TKR. How long ago was your last surgery. I'm sure you've been told it takes a year to heal. What a bummer that you've had to endure 3 major knee surgeries in such a short span of time. All of which sounds like due to mistakes made by the surgeon. I hope he finally got it right after 3 tries. You must have been so angry but must have also had a lot of trust each time that he would get it right "this time". Just wow.

First I would get a second opinion….. if it were me I would not let that Dr do one more thing to my knee ….in my own experience I had tkr Dr put in wrong size I found this out after going getting second opinion 8 weeks out with xray Dr took after surgery…. New Dr said it was 2-3 sizes too big that why all the pain and swelling ….. but he also told me I had to wait 1 year to do revision because it can hurt the tendons and area around the knee won’t heal properly if you operate to soon …so scare me for you that Dr was quick to do surgery on you for something he forgot to do when he was in there……get second opinion you might even need a lawyer , not sure these Dr get away with doing a lot they are not held responsible for but you should check into……I am 62 and active it is tough going through all these surgeries scar tissue is not our friend, so get your second opinion by a Dr outside your Dr network, try some mfr this will help with pain and swelling…. And good luck

Last surgery was 4 weeks ago, yes I did trust him. The kicker was I had no pain before the first knee replacement. I had a swallow knee he said I had a lot of arthritis and that is why he said I needed the replacement. I meet a nurse yesterday she See's the same surgeon and she has had 2 knee replacement and 5 sleeve replacement and she is still having pain. Yes I know that it takes a year to heal, but when it hurts just to sleep something is not right. Thank you for your response.

Thank you, I have been thinking about getting a second opinion but all the doctors know each other and they will call to asks questions about me.
I was black listed when I had recommended surgery for breast cancer. I was diagnosed in 2012 the plastic surgeon did a great job at first then the fat grafting didn't take it got to the point it was 2 sizes different she told be she didn't see anything wrong and told me I was never going to be satisfied among other things. I went to 6 different surgeon's that would not help me. So I am afraid that It will happen again

Thank you. Getting a lawyer is one thing but the practice has good lawyers and have lost if money. I just started social security because I cannot work so paying for a lawyer would wipe me out of savings. I will try to get a second opinion.

Because of your repeated rejections most suggest scar tissue, but also consider this other cause.
I was scheduled for a knee replacement 4 years ago, but I have Allergic Contact Dermatitis, ACD, and although my skin patch tests which I had a decade earlier didn't test positve to metals I was surprised because I know I can't wear pierced earrings with nickel posts. I tested positive to over a dozen other contact allergens which were causing my internal and external inflamation based on the 5 Day Extended Patch Test kit by True Test. Before surgery I insisted on a current allergy test to test all the components. My surgeon said the best test would be a blood test which Medicare will not cover so I forked out $600.00 for a blood draw and my blood was sent to a lab in Illinois. It came back positive for 5 metals allergies , including the nickel allergen my patch test didn't identify, and even though I have several adhesive allergies I didn't test positive to the bone cement which many are allergic to.
Before any more surgery, get this blood test and also as many others have suggested get a second opinion.
I canceled my surgery. Athough I didn't test positive to a titanium allergy the surgeon told me there is no such thing as pure titanium, all mental implants have traces of other metals included some of the five I was allergic to. With wear these metals I am allegic to will seep out and my body will reject the implant. There is a ceramic coated implant on the market but the ortho explained with wear, over time, metals are released.
