Thanks Sue. I think I'm pretty knowledgeable about my body and its mechanics - I've run a lot of marathons and have had just about every overuse injury possible. I also inherited osteoarthritis from my Mom....... and I've had both knees replaced as a result.

Anyway, I started experiencing groin pain about a year ago. I couldn't figure it out, and neither could my trainer. For the longest time I thought it was a groin strain.

10 months later, and after X-rays, I'm told by a very knowledgeable Dr that this pain is due to a very arthritic hip and I need a replacement. I was just stunned until the Dr correctly pointed out that the actual hip joint, the ball and socket, lie directly under the groin.

I'm getting the hip replaced next month. It can't come soon enough!

Joe

That's my story - 40 years of running, skiing, biking, hiking - treated for 4 years for back pain, got so I couldn't walk up stairs. Finally, in desperation, my primary had my hips x-rayed and sent me straight to an ortho surgeon. He started to step into the exam room, turned around and walked out and came back saying "I can't believe those are your hips - they're worse than an 85 year-old." 19 years later, I am so glad they were replaced!
I too have extensive arthritis from my Mom's family, and another probable inherited issue from my Dad's.
I was sad to quit running and volleyball, but he told me if I wanted the hips to last, I had to be kind - I can still hike, bike, swim, even scramble up rocks with my "not-so-little" grandsons, but I don't try to run - I couldn't catch them anyways.
What surgical option did you and the ortho choose?
