What was your recovery like for Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS)?
What was your recovery from the AUS procedure like? If you had previously had radiation treatment for prostate cancer, how did that affect the AUS procedure?

Another question.... with the AUS, can you wear jeans?
I've been wearing trackpants since the prostatectomy because jeans don't fit with the fairly bulky pads.
My experience is that after any major surgery I just had to see what works best for me.
With the weight gain (actually weight shift from muscle to a fatter belly & ass) because of the Lupron I got some 'loose fit' jeans and or a size larger.
Don't we usually deal with whatever the surgery is first then adjust from there?
Whatever works for you is the best choice.
May it all go well, complete, and care-free for you.

3 ReactionsAlso, since the AUS is like a 'pacemaker' for my bladder, I have to be mindful of how close I am to a microwave oven or if an old airplane is flying low overhead. (not ! ) LMAO
This is the 2nd time it's happened, so it must be true.... your mood really does lift the moment you receive a surgery date. The waiting really is the hardest part.So for those who are stuck in an endless wait & feeling down about it - as soon as you get an actual date, everything's rosy.I'm having my AUS installed June 2nd.That's the day after King's Birthday, so an extra-long holiday, for me.I've read anywhere between 2 weeks & 4 weeks off work. What's the recovery time for others?

1 ReactionHad my AUS surgery 7/22. My recovery has been similar to what others have already posted. My catheter was removed at the end of the surgery, so I never really even knew it was there (other than being told). The first two weeks were painful and swollen (roughly grapefruit-sized scrotal package), but both side effects have improved the last two weeks. Still some swelling and relatively minor pain, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. One side effect hasn't improved as much: my scrotum "sticks" to my upper thigh, and when I separate the two, it hurts more than a little. I don't know what's causing the stickiness, but I'll be back with the surgeon for activation in about two weeks, so I'm hoping he'll be able to tell me the cause and what to do about it.
I got a circular pillow to sit on about 5 days after the surgery, and it helped the sitting-down pain quite a bit, and I now use it only if I'm going to be sitting for a while (like evening TV-watching).
My best wishes to all who are now impatiently waiting for their surgery. I'll report again post-activation on 9/4.

I had AUS implant two days ago and would like to hear from others what you experienced immediately after surgery when discharged.
Also How long did you have before you didn't need a scrotum supporter (Jock Strap)?
I have:
Perineal discomfort.
Swollen testicles
Abdominal bloating
When urinating half way done I have to push to void completely.
They sent me home with Celebrex/Bactrim and Gabapentin. One day on the Gabapentin and then off immediately. It made me spacey and unstable. I wouldn't have passed a field sobriety test and I don't drink and didn't want to have a fall risk.
I'd love to hear others immediate after surgery effects from others.
TIA
I wonder if your experience with gabapentin was caused by it, or another drug or drug combo
Both my wife and I have been on gabapentin for years. We both take a wide variety of other drugs.
I take 600mg 3 times a day. Never been spacey from it.

1 ReactionAt 2 days post-op, everything will be uncomfortable.
Things should *start* to settle down after around 2 weeks.
In some ways, recovery from the AUS surgery was almost as bad as the prostatectomy - for a while.
The device is activated in 6 weeks, but until then, it's swelling, lots of bruising & discomfort.
Horrible, but it's worth it in the end.
I went back to the surgeon after 2 weeks - even though he didn't want to see me until 6 weeks - because I was concerned about mainly the healing of the incisions.
Particularly the perineum one - it looked lumpy & gnarly. It didn't look like it was healing properly at all.
But I eventually got in to see him & he had a look & said it was fine.
Turns out he was right. By the 6 week activation mark, the lumpy incision had calmed down & healed nicely.
So I know what you mean. It looks & feels like it won't heal properly or the discomfort will never end.
But by activation time, it'll all be fine.
Been there.... done that... in June.

I do believe it's the Gabapentin. A couple of years ago I was prescribed it so 'what I can't remember' and was unstable and fell.
This time I thought "what the heck. Try it again".
That is some nasty stuff. For me anyway. Thanks though for your input.
