63 yr old husband on Gemcitabine and Cisplatin

Posted by rose1966 @rose1966, 2 days ago

Yesterday, we were at the Smilow Cancer Center from 8am to 2pm. My husband, Dwight had his blood drawn…then at about 9am …the nurse started the saline solution in his Port. He was very relaxed in a heated recliner and a nice warm blanket. After saline, nurse started Gemcitabine. He was drinking his 2 liters of water during the treatments. They brought him lunch, which he loved. Then started him on Cisplatin. I was with him the whole time knitting. He brought a book on lighthouses. After the Cisplatin was finished. The saline infusion was given. Took an hour to finish that bag.
So far, he hasn’t had any side effects. He went to work this morning…he’s a bookkeeper. My youngest daughter works with him. She is so helpful. He got home and had good protien with fruit/veggies and continued drinking his 2 to 3 liters of water.
At the center , We met a few really nice people there who would pray with us during treatment. Also, the social worker came in and had a counseling session with Dwight.
He has 7 more to go ….I really pray that his white , red blood cells stay steady so he doesn’t have to miss a treatment. His platelets, also.
I have to say the flavored coffee at the center was addicting!
Next Monday the 24th is just the Gemcitabine infusion. Then he has a week off. When the treatments are over…he gets a CT Scan…then RC. He has stage 2 MIBC. I did remember to put some of the Emla lidocaine cream on his port to numb the needle prick and it did work. He didn’t feel anything. His port is glued and is waterproof. I put Saran Wrap over the Emla cream an hour before we got to the center.
Has anyone had very good results on gem/cis treatments? He’s using baby shampoo to help prevent hair loss. Also, a baby toothbrush and no flossing. This to prevent bleeding. Also, an electric razor, only.
Has anyone been through MIBC chemo and the RC ? Did the cancer ever come back? Do you need to go for cystoscope or CT scans every few months? Not sure if they’ll put him on immunotherapy drugs after operation or do chemo, yet.
Thank you and praying for everyone, always xx

I went through the same regimen as your husband three years ago. I was a stage IIIa MIBC. The chemo took care of all of the lesions and reduced the tumor significantly. The RC was a success and I have been clear for the entire time. I went back quarterly for two years for blood work and CT scan and now go in twice a year for blood and CT scan. I did not go through immunotherapy. Good luck and praying for a good outcome for your husband.

@weatherguy6 Thankyou so much! It’s great to hear that you are cancer free! I am praying my husband has the same positive outcome 🙏. Have you ever had humming in your ears during the treatments? Tinnitus. He said he’ll call in to see if there’s anything they can do for that side effect. But everything is going so well. He’s been able to go to work. Hopefully, he’ll have limited side effects. God bless you xx

Rose1966. Unfortunately, i have been experiencing tinnitus for some time not associated with chemo. The only side effect i could associate with chemo was fatigue one on the day and day following the treatment. I worked through chemo and i know that helped. I think the most important thing going forward is a positive attitude for both you and your husband.
