Chronic hives (uticaria)

Posted by willow5 @willow5, Feb 28, 2024

I came down with chronic hives in 2018 at age 65. Take maximum Xolair injections monthly. Take 5 mg prednisone to help with itch, and sometimes it has to be daily, and daily Allegra. Has anyone found something that actually helps with the itch or control of the hives?

The prednisone, if I take daily, does keep the hives from getting out of control, and even though the dose is low I sure would like to not take it. Thank you

Have they thought about cyclosporine? . It’s sometimes recommended after zolair failure and some people get long remissions. It has to be monitored closely though.
Dapsone has also been used with success in some patients. The International guidelines have the drugs used in section 5.4. It would give you something to ask doc about. I wish you luck!

Thank you. My Xolair is controlled I’d say 90% of the time. I’ve looked at the cyclosporine and that’s a pretty intense drug that’s used for transplant people. I now have a red light pad for some other purpose, and next time I have an outbreak I’m going ot use that. It’s got some good research behind it.
