Esophageal abrasion with ear pain

Posted by mysterywhiteboy @mysterywhiteboy, Feb 11 7:51pm

I accidentally swallowed a hard, sharp piece of pizza crust a little over a week ago (2/3) and felt obvious discomfort on the right side of my throat as it went down. It wasn’t significant pain but it did feel very uncomfortable.

Since then, I have tried gargling with warm salt water but the abrasion is too far down my throat for it to have any effect. So I switched over to warm decaf green tea with honey, which does provide temporary relief. This in combination with eating soft foods and chewing anything more firm into a soft mush before swallowing and I have seen little improvement. I was doing a bit better yesterday, but I am now again feeling pain in my throat and pain/pressure radiating into my right ear at rest and more when swallowing as of several days ago. My obvious concern is infection but I also don’t have any other symptoms of an infection (fever, drainage, etc). I’m wondering if what I’m feeling is referred glossopharyngeal nerve pain from my throat to my ear without an infection. But would that also cause the sensation of pressure in the ear?

I went to urgent care on Sunday and they didn’t find any obvious signs of infection. I was planning to see an ENT as soon as possible to have them take a closer look with a scope but know I’m less likely to get an appointment with a specialist in short order.

My question:

What is a reasonable amount of time for an esophageal abrasion from eating food to heal on its own? I’m on day 8.

Thank you.

I had the same thing happen to me and it was so painful on the first couple of days I could barely eat. I was visiting friends at their cottage so it was very embarrassing trying to explain why I couldn’t eat much of their food. I would say it took about 2 weeks to heal but even in the succeeding days I had to be careful for a couple of months. No effect on my ear, but I have had sore throats that did make my ear sore.

Thanks for your reply.

I am now at the 2 week mark and still dealing with this after being really strict on a soft diet. Curious to hear what kind of foods/drinks worked for you.

I was hoping to see an ENT asap to have them take a closer look but the soonest appointment isn’t for another 5 weeks. Ridiculous. I can’t wait that long.

I’m really worried something more serious is going on since I’m not really any better than day 1.

I understand your concern. In my case I was just careful to eat small amounts at a time and chew thoroughly. I suffer from GERD and at first thought that was the problem so I took Gavisgone tablets along with my prescription meds domperidone and Previcid. Is it possible that you have acid reflux that is aggravating the injury from what you swallowed?

If you can see an ENT in 5 weeks why not make the appointment and if things are looking up before then you can always cancel. I guess the other alternative would be go to the Emergency and see an ENT sooner. I am not sure how your system works because I am in Montreal, 🇨🇦, good luck getting the attention you deserve.

I appreciate your response.

As far as I know I don’t have GERD, as I haven’t had the symptoms associated with it. I’m just puzzled why I’m not seeing any improvement since the injury after following a strict soft diet and chewing anything somewhat harder into a soft consistency.

What’s strange is I’ll often wake up first thing in the morning feeling pretty good with minimal to no symptoms. Then it flares up with eating something as simple as a scrambled egg or hummus sandwich on wheat bread that I chew thoroughly before swallowing. I almost wonder if I need to go to a full liquid diet and blend anything firmer into a palatable consistency.

I plan to keep my existing appointment 5 weeks from now while seeing if I can see another ENT sooner. Someone recommended also looking into a gastroenterologist as an alternative to take a closer look, so I plan to give that a try as well.

Trying to avoid an expensive ER visit if at all possible (I’m in Washington state). Meanwhile it’s hard not to worry about something more serious is going on, like a perforation.

No one likes going to the doctor, and five weeks goes by fast.
Please go to the appointment to find out why the pain is persistent. Also, if you desire, look at my past posts concerning how many ENT's I had to go to before a correct diagnosis was made. You may need to make a second and even third appointment with different ENT's. Even a CAT Scan missed my throat tumor.
Best Wishes to you.

@mysterywhiteboy have you got a primary care doctor that might be able to do an X-ray or that might get you in sooner with ENT.

Thankfully I was able to get an appointment sooner with the same ENT. Just have to wait until a week from Friday. I might need to wait additional time from this initial consultation for a procedure to be done. We’ll see. Fingers crossed I’ll be healed by then and won’t need the appointment.
