Prolia discontinuation

Posted by czauderer @czauderer, Dec 12, 2024

Hi, due to an osteoporosis diagnosis, I took two injections of Prolia six months apart and due two side effects, I want to come off of it. I do not want to transition to a bisphosphonate or remain on one. How do I take myself off of Prolia safely? I am not getting a straight answer from my doctor.

The Find a Professional isn’t really helpful in the Houston metro area where the professionals listed include a dermatologist and an orthopedic specialist but none that make osteoporosis their specialty.

I went to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis website. For Houston, it lists one provider: Obstetrical & Gynecological Associates, PA. Leroy Leeds. I wonder if you went to a different website.

REPLY

Yes, we’re looking at the same search results. Unfortunately further searches on Dr. Leeds don’t mention osteoporosis rather they say “Dr. Leeds has one office in Texas where he specializes in OBGYN / Obstetrics & Gynecology”. If he had an interest or expertise it would seem he would mention it as some listings do. So I’m not sure whether there is an actual vetting process or doctors self report or get on the list by some other method.

Hello, it is nice to finally find another person from Houston on this site. I too have searched for doctors with osteoporosis specialty to no avail. The site you mention does list 4 docs and 1 PA. Two are OB/gyn, Dr. Gagel has retired and Christina Yazdani with UT is a PA. I thought I might call her practice tomorrow.
I am currently seeing a Rheumatologist.
I have been on Prolia for 5 years. I took a break from Prolia for 3 months in Sept. due to dental implant, experienced an L-1 fracture a few days before I went back on Prolia. In my conversation w my Rheumotologist questioning fracture risk, and if I sh go off Prolia, she gave me an Evenity brochure and recommended a year of Evenity followed by Reclast for 3-6 years to buy me some time. I’ve had success and no side effects (except for elevated cholesterol) on Prolia and she thinks it’s a good fit for me. I am feeling uncertain with next step.
I would like an to understand and receive research based advice to help me with this next step. Meanwhile I am watching all the YouTube’s recommended on this site and those offered thru the Boston group.
Stay in touch and good luck.

Hi I had my last shot of Prolia in January, 2024. At that time I was on it for a year. It made my body ache. My hair started to fall out and my nails wouldn’t grow. They kept splitting and peeling. I started Reclast last summer. I feel good. My hair is growing back and my nails are strong and not splitting anymore. My concern was that my calcium was too low. I have Malabsorption Syndrome, I probably shouldn’t be on Prolia at all. Good luck.

I also have had massive hair loss after 3 prolia shots (to the extent of now wearing a wig and baseball caps). After 9 months since my last Prolia shot in April, 2024, I am just starting to see a little bit of new hair growth along with the continued loss of old hair. Other new problems included extreme constipation and bloating and increased body and joint pain.

My endocrinologist did not agree with me that these are side effects are from Prolia but agreed to switch me to Actonel to avoid the rebound effect. ( I am fearful of Reclast being an annual infusion and the risk of its long term side effects after Prolia problems). I am having difficulty convincing her to track CTX and P1NP. She has given me a script for that bloodwork. I had it tested in Oct before actonel and will get it done in the next couple weeks again.

May I ask how your Malabsorption Syndrome was diagnosed??? I also am seeing a gastroenterologist who has done an upper GI, colonoscopy, etc and has now ordered a CT scan of abdomen. Tests (biopsies) for celiac have come back negative. I eat healthy but my blood work does not reflect it. Ex: My growth factor level-3 is consistently below normal which is not good for bone growth.

I am going to call Monday to a new dr that is I see on the bone health org. link someone posted below in the Pittsburgh area. If anyone else knows of a good bone doctor in the Pittsburgh area that would be helpful, I would be grateful if you would share.

Thanks to everyone who shares your issues on this website. It has been extremely helpful to me.

Wishing everyone all the best!

Hi Reddogs,
You would think Houston would have someone who specializes in Osteoporosis but the pickings are few. I’m seeing an endocrinologist who mentioned Prolia on our first meeting. Not anxious to be on something for the rest of my life; I’m almost 79. So I’d like to consult with someone who is up to date on the various drugs and the sequencing to have them work. Let me know how things go with Christina. Maybe she’s the answer.

I don't know any of these doctors, but I've been hearing about good things about Tabatabai from other osteoporosis specialists.

The following post shares a few doctors, one an endocrinologist in my current clinic on Sunset, I might give her office a call. Might be a bit awkward since my rheumatologist is at same clinic?

I too, had a conversation about side effects from Prolia with a PA from an Endocrinologist’s office. She did not believe me either. In all of her many years, (she is 28) dispensing Prolia she had never heard of anyone with side effects. I just laughed. But decided to never go back to her.

I found some relief by doubling up on my calcium tablets for about a week before the injection and for about 10 days after the injection. Not everyone responds the same to the “pull” of calcium from the blood.

I have been told by my Endocrinologist that it is safer to have dental work (pulling teeth) done at the beginning of the 5th month on Prolia and then, you are only off Prolia for 30 days rather than 90..

I argued, who can schedule a dental emergency?????

I do want to know if the 5th month for implants has been recommended to anyone else.
