Effect of Statins on PMR pain

Posted by alissahe @alissahe, Nov 22, 2024

I was extremely hesitant to take cholesterol meds having heard that they can cause joint and muscle pain. I’ve had PMR for 2 years and certainly didn’t want to add another pain factor.
My dr convinced me that with a new drug that doesn’t have statins and a very low dosage of a drug that does we could lower my cholesterol without causing muscle pain.
Two days on this combination and my PMR pain jumped from a 4 or 5 to an 8 or 9.
No thanks!

I am taking 3 mg of Prednisone and have recently started taking Crestor. I am now experiencing pain in my knees and pain in my leg muscles. I am also experienced increased fatigue and headaches . Has anyone else experienced this? At first I thought it was a PMR flare but now think not.

Those are side effects of Statins. I have the same effects. I have tried every version of statins and within days become sick and muscle aches. Stop taking them for a week and find out. I have genetic cholesterol so I had to find something else that worked. The steroids increased my cholesterol making it even more important.

Thank you so much for your reply .
It is hard to figure out what pain is what! I am so frustrated with being in pain. I will try your suggestion.

Hello @salmountain,

I moved your discussion and combined it with an existing discussion titled:

@alissahe and @tuckerp shared their experiences with muscle and joint pain on PMR meds and may be able to relate to what you are experiencing.

Sounds like your Dr is treating you. But I was told at one time since my Triglycerides were fine that I could probably get by with a little higher total cholesterol. That was not the case. I came dangerously close to a stroke. Here is a little excerpt from an AI search.
"However, it's also possible to have low triglycerides and high LDL levels if your body produces high levels of LDL, even if you eat a healthy diet. LDL cholesterol comes from both your diet and heredity.
High levels of LDL cholesterol can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. To lower your risk, you can try to lower your LDL cholesterol. " Repatha has been good for me at reducing LDL.

Hi Tuckerp!

Are you still taking the Repatha injections to lower your LDL? Do they have in a pill form?
Glad you are doing good on this med, statins are awful in general!

I’ve been on Crestor for a few years with no issues, some of my friends had issues like yours and switched. Contact your dr’s office tell them of your issues and ask doctor if you could stop for a few weeks and see if the knee and leg pain goes away.

I started on Lipitor 30 years ago. Had high LDL and low HDL, which is a combination Dr's don't like. When the pain started from PMR I thought maybe it was the statin but it was not. The prednisone alters a lot of things in your blood chemistry but my Cholesterol reading have not really changed.
Good Luck!

yes. I have tried every version of statin. All of them seem to eventually cause a problem or they dont work. The Repatha has worked. 3 years now. Its twice a month with an Epi pen. Its actually pretty easy. I pinch my belly fat and give it. My LDL now runs about 60. My total is 120. I was a little worried about the fact that you need some cholesterol. Studies say low cholesterol leads to dementia. I just figure that at 73 whatever I was doing was not working. As long as my quality of life is not in jeopardy from taking the drug. I do not think Repatha is in a pill form. Its also a little expensive. The first year my drug insurance did not cover it so I switched at medicare enrollment to United Healthcare and they cover it. A couple of months its expensive due to the donut hole. They also have financial assistance if you qualify. They have a similar drug that if given in the Dr office by the Dr then Medicare Part B covers it.

Good idea to hold statin for a time. I do suggest CoQ10 with
them but evidence is not strong that it will help.
You could try another statin if Crestor seems to be the cause. We do need help for our increased risk factor of
systemic inflammation contributing to cardiovascular events.
Statins are anti inflammatory as well as lowering bad cholesterol so worth the try. CoQ10 has many positive benefits in itself so stay with that and Mediterranean eating
habits. Watch numbers for your hs-CRP, A1c and vitamin D.
