Any long Covid people here who developed lung nodules?

Posted by ericy210 @ericy210, Jun 16, 2023

As part of the clinical long Covid study I’ve been doing for a year, I had a clean chest X-ray a year ago. Monday they found a 9mm nodule in my right posterior lung as well as “minor air trapping.” I’ve never smoked.

They referred me to their (University of Illinois Chicago) Lung Nodule department. The said they have seen cases lung nodules with long Covid. My symptoms have been fatigue and brain fog. This was very unexpected and worrying, since my dad died of lung cancer two years ago and cancer also got his sister and mom.

Have you seen any reputable studies or articles on this combination? I’m finding quite a few on my own and would like to see someone else’s “homework” if they’ve already been looking at it.

@donlaujr, a lung nodule can be cancerous. But most lung nodules aren't cancerous.

Lung nodules are small clumps of cells in the lungs. They're very common. Most lung nodules are scar tissue from past lung infections.

Lung nodules usually don't cause symptoms. They're often found by accident on a chest X-ray or CT scan done for some other reason. Read more from Mayo Clinic here https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lung-cancer/expert-answers/lung-nodules/faq-20058445

Colleen , thank you, just had another chest x ray, the nodules are stable with no change in size, and after researching further, as you said, it is common, it was a concern because in prior x rays they did not show up

I am so sorry this has happened to you. My parents had lung cancer and died from it, so it was quite unnerving to have these nodules come along. Petscan was okay last year, and I'll be going through the same tests in December.

Hi, I just wanted to follow up with you to see how you are now? I am in a similar boat with multiple lung nodules that are being followed with repeat scans. I lost a parent to lung cancer too and still have PTSD from that experience. My nodules were found in Sept 2024. Rescanned in Jan 2025 with no change. They recommend annual scans for me with the next one in Sept 2025 this year. Thanks for your insight. Wishing you good health!

In 2021 my husband had 3 full dose covid shots. He has COPD but quit smoking in 2007 with no issues. He was doing radiation treatments on his head for a small precancerous spot and doc suggested he would be illegible for third shot. The last shot was in Sept. He never had Covid. In December 2021 he had an emergency pacemaker put in due to shortness of breath. Seemed to help. In Feb he had serious breathing issues. Hospital found nothing wrong and sent him home with medication and cough syrup along with oxygen machine. They pursued heart issues and found nothing. He continued to get worse and primary kept increasing his cough syrup and oxygen levels. I messaged his heart doc who saw him and immediately sent him to ER. This time his lungs were checked and he had pulmonary embolisms. After a month of in home intravenous antibiotics and several CT Scans he improved. Thought he was going to need to surgery but he didn't. He still has breathing issues when he is active. He constantly has to stop to get his breath. After seeing a specialist he is being considered for a pulmonary implant that should open a passageway so he can get air out. We feel this is connected to the shots since he received what he did and it all happened within a short time. He has high hemoglobin issues and some doctors want to blame it on his hormone therapy but he was on that for about 15 years and no issues. I'm hoping this implant works.

In 2022 I had a CT scan of abdominal. Pelvis and chest because of consistent Temps >100.0. They were looking for anything abnormal. There were multiple < m nodules found. I was told most adults get them as they age. I am a nonsmoker and not exposed to smoke. I got a repeat to check on them this year, no changes were found. Still I am skeptical, still with shortness of breath and exhaustion with activity.

Hi Sherry, I just wanted to ask if you are still following your multiple nodules. I saw that in 2023 you had a repeat scan and they were stable. I am just beginning this "surveillance" period on multiple nodules found in September 2024. I had four small nodules in different lobes in both lungs. Ground Glass nodules. I just had them rescanned end of January 2025 and there has been no change. I am worried because they are still there though. I was hoping and praying they would have just disappeared by now as my pulmonologist said many times they just resolve on their own in a few months time. I have another scan in September this year. That will be eight months from now. I hate the anxiety of having scans and not knowing what's going on with things meanwhile but this is the boat I am in now. May I also ask what size your nodules were and if they were solid or part solid/ground glass. I'm just looking for someone to talk to that is in a similar situation as mine. Thank you!

Hello Donlaujr,
May I ask how many nodules you are watching and what size they are? I found out I have four ground glass nodules in Sept 2024. Scanned in Jan 2025. Still there. Stable. Next scan is Sept 2025. I had covid Sept 2023. Pretty typical case that ran for about 2-3 weeks. Not sure where I got these nodules from. Thanks

Yes. I have a 7mm nodule in my right lower lung base, first spotted in August of 2021 following a Covid infection in March of 2020 which began my 4-year nightmare of Long Covid. I also have opacities now, with COPD (all new since Covid). The nodule appears to be stable - last scanned in Sept of 2024. I lost my mom to non-small cell lung cancer in 2023.

Good morning,
My chest CT in 2022 showed nodules were 3mm and 4mm in size. I had the year followup in 2023 with the largest still 4mm. So I am low risk and no further imaging. Still it worries me. It was not the ground glass appearance of many Covid victims.
I also had brain CT changes that worry me, along with a meningioma I had a year followup with no changes.
Now 2 years later I want to repeat my chest and head just for my own sake.
I understand how you feel. I would just like to return to my normal.
Take care.

Thank you for your reply and for sharing the details of your nodules. I am glad to hear that yours have not grown and considered stable with no further imaging necessary. For whatever my opinion is worth, I don't think its unreasonable to have another follow up 2 years later, especially if it brings you peace of mind and closure. Now with low dose scans available I don't think the risks of exposure is too high anymore. Wishing you good health!

Hello, can you tell me more about the multiple lung nodules you have? I found out from a scan in September 2024 I have 4 lung nodules in both lungs. The biggest is 7mm and they are all ground glass nodules. I had a follow up scan in January 2025 and they are still there with no change. Darn it. I was hoping they would be gone. 🙁 I am a former smoker quit 15 years ago. Dad died of lung cancer. I am terrified of what these things are or could become. The waiting for the future to unfold is difficult to do sometimes. How many nodules do you have? Were they solid or ground glass. Im sorry to hear your shortness of breath became bad. I hope it has improved for you and that you are doing well. Wishing you good health!
