Vocal Cord dysfunction?
Has anyone had a very frightening episode, very similar to drowning, where your vocal cords spasm, and close? No air can get in your lungs and it literally feels like you will die without air.
This has happened 3 times, a long (several years or months) time between attacks. It lasts about 2-3 minutes but of course feels much longer.
I do have appointment with a ENT dr. in several weeks, but am frightened it will happen again before I see him.
Any exercise or preventative hints?

The lack of efficacy with a slew of medicines for 4 years, and after ruling out reflux with testing, the laryngoscopy with strobe told the story.
Great question! One I plan to ask my cough clinic lead physician.
I hear you. I was also misdiagnosed work silent reflux, which Ph and manometry testing ruled out.
Wow, I remember from your previous posts the industrial environment but not the fact that the snow became gray! Now that you say that I remember the snow in the streets becoming gray, understandable, but not the snow on the grass/yard etc.
For me it wasn't factory environment, it was school building environment. The old buildings and then the remodeling of the building and the after affects of the outgassing of all the new materials. And, like you, my involvement with my rental properties (50+ years) and my own home with remodeling etc. etc. And let me not forget the gardening from childhood into my adult years of using things such as peat moss.
Yes you are right about your statements related to " cause and effect/ spend zero time wondering where I got it". As I have said to myself it has to do with just living life and how ones' life unfolded through the years. However most of my life I have always looked for answers in everything, which as we know we can't always get and it can drive us crazy. Don't know if I can change that habit at my age, 🙄 I need to try, I need to, for many reasons.
I hope I am not incorrectly clearing my throat. I do the huff coughing with the air way clearance methods. I will again review what I do with the new pulmonologist I now must decide upon due to Dr. McShane's moving onto the NIH. Back to the big city for her vs. Tyler.
Thanks for sharing and your response, I understand.

Hi @adkindt - I wanted to let you know I moved your post here to a discussion in the Ear, Nose and Throat support group on Mayo Clinic Connect. I did this because you indicated that after misdiagnosis, your actual diagnosis was a form of vocal cord dysfunction. Please meet members such as @mermaid7272 @imallears @jennymccormick @loribmt. They may be familiar with the kind of journey you've had with trying to get the correct diagnosis.
@lisalucier. My heart goes out to you. I've had that happen mm last year in August almost every time I mm woke up. If it happens again, try to relax, which I know is hard to do. At the worst, you could pass out, then the vocal chord will relax and you'll be able to breathe again and wake up. I had to have a trache because I have had bilateral vocal chord paralysis for 19 years and was able to live with it with adjustments on how I did things. (My vocal chords were permanently stuck close together.) After the surgery, the ENT Specialist at U of M discovered my vocal fold was swollen due to arthritis, closing the small airway I had. It would then spasm and close being so close to the other vocal fold. I believe you too are having a spasm of some kind. You will be mm ok until your visit to the ENT. I waited from August to November with spasms every few days. You'll be ok. I'll pray for you.
