Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Posted by curlyqlinda1 @curlyqlinda1, Jan 23, 2024

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

I kept trying to resist, but it makes the world of difference with a small amount with a compound that I put on sometimes one pump instead of two it’s helped with energy, skin tone, muscle tone, agility, bladder, control, and bowel function. In fact, I’m going for PT at Mayo and we’re recognizing that this low-dose prescribed by my gynecologist that I was not listening to for years is making a difference. I will be 70 “zero” birthday, in February.

I'm late to this discussion, but it pertains to what I'm going thru now and I'm trying to find answers. I'm 74, had a complete hysterectomy at age 35. My GYN put me on a "hormone patch" and I stayed on it until I was 45 at which time he told me I didn't need to use it any longer. I have struggled for years with a low sex drive and my doctor told me it was "between my ears" and I should just "fantasize" and "do it." My poor husband. Anyway, now I'm 74 and in addition to the low sex drive, I now suffer from hypothyroidism, terrible insomnia, brain fog, fatigue, vaginal dryness and now night sweats! Honestly, I'm too old for this! I'm now in search of an endocrinologist in hopes of starting HRT, but once they find out my age, they won't even schedule me for an appointment. I'm sick and tired of living like this. Any advice?

Sorry you are experiencing this. I’m exploring doctors that are out of my state. It’s difficult to find those with a different approach in HRT. If you scroll back a few pages, I think some doctor names are listed.

But, why won’t your Primary prescribe Estradiol cream? That’s applied locally and isn’t controversial that I’m aware of. It helps a lot of people. Have you tried that?

Until you can get some help (so sorry to hear what you are going through) maybe you could try “Wild Yam Cream”. I just started using it, I am 67 and is helping a lot with my sleep and dryness and hot flashes. You just rub a small finger scoop onto your arm, leg, chest wherever.
Good luck with your search.
It is awful that in this day and age, we are still being treated like we no nothing and are hypochondriacs.

He just tells me that I'm 74 and hormones won't help me. I'm going to call his office tomorrow and see if he'll consider Estradiol. He's so against HRT in any form and stands by the studies that HRT causes cancer. I'm thankful for finding this site and have been reading, learning and making notes. I live in a rural area and am planning to find another doctor, even though I'll have to drive an hour to do it. Thanks for taking the time to respond and to suggest the "Wild Yam Cream." It's in my Amazon Cart!

I get that too, from specialists at leading medical facilities. I’m still exploring other opinions.

Ref. Estradiol, it is a locally applied cream. It doesn’t enter the system the way HRT treatment does. Even doctors who don’t favor HRT prescribe Estradiol, based on what I’ve seen. I don’t think it’s controversial.

Good luck with everything.

I second this comment. Estradiol is locally applied and is not systemic. You're given outdated medical advice from your doctor. Believe me, I'd drive hours to access the relief you'll get from the vaginal cream.

Great News! Just wanted to share with everyone that I have an appointment with a doctor who specializes in Women's Health with an emphasis on post-menopause, hormonal therapy and aging in women. Now all I have to do is get thru the next 6 weeks without killing anyone!
