If you have high potassium levels, I was told no bananas. My potassium was a bit elevated at one time, so my nephrologist "prescribed" two pieces of unsweetened black licorice per day. It works!

Just curious. Do you know why your doctor suggested unsweetened black licorice? I am not a doctor but was told to avoid that because of a drop in eGFR. I've pulled my eGFR up from 35 to 59 eating a diet that is heavily (but not totally) plant based. All other kidney readings were ok.

Don't exactly know why; however, it has lowered my potassium levels and my GFR has remained the same. I have realized every person is different with PKD. I'm just doing what's been recommended for me.

I was also confused about my diet. I consulted a Nutritionist who led me through the initial few months. I can't say enough good things about a book I came upon online. The title is RRENAL DIET COOKBOOK FOR THE NEWLY DIAGNOSED BY SUSAN ZOGHEIB. The jacket states that here are 100 low-sodium, low protein low potassium and low phosphorus in this book. Even my Nutritionist was impressed by these recipes! Good luck...Goodbye to almost all fast foods.!

Oh! I'm not Fatty Patty any more. I've dropped over 20 lbs!!

I have CKD 3. Also hypothyroidism. I need to lose 15 lbs and used to do keto but I read low protein is best for CKD. I’m also a fussy eater and salads and cold veggies are out and no fruit. Wondering what to eat?

@fastln Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I invite you to wander through this kidney and bladder support group, and notice the different conversations about diet. Realizing that each patient is different, and our dietary requirements might be a variation from what someone else can eat, I bet you will find some great pointers!

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you may need to talk yourself into being less of a fussy eater! Salads, cold veggies and no fruit - is that part of a hypothyroidism regimen, or is it part of the fussy eating?

I’m also a fussy eater. Unsweetened licorice won’t cut it. What else can we eat? I’m doing keto anyway because of my anemia (meat is required eating for functional purposes but it’s not a solution, gotta eat other stuff as well)

Recently diagnosed with cka and my one kidney is working at 40% , blood test result. I had one kidney removed in 1991-not cancerous but I was told at the time it was probably not functioning properly since birth.
Thing is I have had 6 monthly blood test every year since then and I was not told of any decline in my kidney function over the last 30+ years. Why would this deterioration occur without setting alarm bells off?

Likewise. I try to avoid raw, uncooked carrots.

I use nutritional yeast. Tastes very much like grated parmesan cheese and is a good source of protein. Also liquid aminos. Protein is actually a combination of amino acids. Also eating lots of nuts for protein
