What do you do when pain medications become less effective?

For pain I take, Trazadone and Hydromorphone, does nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank You

Hydromorphone is generic for Dilaudid. That’s some really hefty pain med. What dosage are you on? I know that I have to specify a particular generic for my pain med. The generics are not all the same. I’d talk to your pharmacist about that.

I have severe degenerative disc disease and have had over twenty surgeries in the last 15 years. I have chronic back pain. I have been on Morphine for 10 years to manage my pain and I have Percocet for when the pain breaks out more severe. I can say there is no magic bullet, my pain meds make my pain manageable, doesn’t stop it completely. If you feel your meds don’t help, try not taking them and you will see that they do work.

I feel so bad for you!! Why did the drs approve all those surgeries? I have to take them, I mostly take Trazadone for nerve pain, 25 MG to 200. Not all at once!! 100 before bed, I sleep through the night. If use the bathroom, hurts again so maybe 25 mg. Take Care

@wvsue thank you for sharing this! I have resisted taking hyddromorphone because of sensitivity to it but it never occurred to me that generics could have different no active ingredients!

I read your discussion and wanted to chime in on the company's that make the pills. I noticed one day the pharmacy had given me a huge pill , I called they said it was a different brand name and I also noticed the huge pill did not work as well for my pain also I have poly cystic kidney disease and the large pills caused me kidney pain/ issues , was not as strong even though they were bigger does not mean better just different fillers and make up , I talked to my pharmacy that I would rather stay w 1 brand name and not the large pills. The next month after suffering that month as if I were taking a sugar pill they put me back on smaller pills and I noticed a real difference in affects of the medication so be aware of this also. I have on my record the brand name only and honestly do know it made a huge difference in my pain . Do not mean to stick my nose into anyone else's business but this was just my opinion.

@gldburg92jeep I do believe you are right! I had the same experience with something I was prescribed! I have never been so violently sick taking medications like the one I was prescribed, before! I checked the pills and although the pharmacy label on the bottle had the medication name on it the pills didn’t have any markings whatsoever on them! I asked the pharmacist why there were no markings on the pill and he said that’s just how the pharmaceutical company made them. I checked them out on drugs.com pill identifier and it said they were for veterinary use! I told my pharmacist never to give me that generic brand again!

Besides being a member of this group, I am a retired pharmacist with a doctorate.
All medications whether they are brand name or generic have to meet strict standards of efficacy by the government. Some drugs come in different shapes and sizes yet they are the same. In fact, some manufacturers actually make the tablets that are sold as generic brands but are made by brand name companies.
As far as a pharmacist dispensing you a medication that is for veterinary use, that is not possible. Pharmacies do not stock veterinary medications. I would recommend taking the suspect tablets back to the pharmacy, show him and let him explain.

I’m prescribed Percocet 10-325, and when I received a different pill, I found out it was Oxymorphone. There sure is a difference in those 2.
