Foods that are not healthy for kidneys

I just met with a renal dietician. Very thorough and talked to me over an hour. It was recommended to go vegetarian, which is a bit difficult for me. I don't eat red meat; however love chicken and fish. So far my potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and protein levels are all in the normal range. I just want to keep things in the normal range! I highly recommend a renal nutritionist. She opened my eyes to a lot. Also, the app Chronometer is excellent. You log your food each day and everything is broken down as to the percentage you are eating for all the vitamins and minerals! This has really helped!

By the way, the only fruit she told me to avoid is star fruit. It has a toxin that can really harm the kidneys.

I was told bananas are not good yet another resource stated they were fine

Bananas are high in potassium. Many kidney disease patients need to limit potassium. Perhaps that is why there is controversy about bananas.

I have used Chronometer, it takes a little patience to navigate the site, maybe enter your own home-cooking recipes and work through the routine of your diet, but after about two weeks it gets easier and faster to use. Enter food names in the search and it will give you good tracking of all the nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, calories, water intake, fiber....pretty much everything. I do a lot of shopping at Aldi, most the brands they sell are in the Chronometer database. If you dine out, most of the food items with the chains are found in the database too. I used Chronometer heavily for about 3-4 months. Now that I have a good handle on the variety of foods I can eat, I haven't used it as much. It's a really good place to start when you're in the 'I'm lost and don't know what to do' phase of CKD.

@maryland9 I know you have said you are in the beginning stages of CKD Chronic Kidney Disease. And you might find lots of conflicting information about what to eat. As many will say, "eat for the numbers". In my case, I have to eat more potassium, and even take potassium supplements! But we all need to watch our intake of salt, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, and protein.

National Kidney Foundation has helpful information about nutrition: https://www.kidney.org/nutrition
Ask your nephrologist to a referral for a renal dietician to help you figure out what is best for you.

I have CKD 3. Also hypothyroidism. I need to lose 15 lbs and used to do keto but I read low protein is best for CKD. I’m also a fussy eater and salads and cold veggies are out and no fruit. Wondering what to eat?
