Hearing loss due to tinnitis?

My brother has tinnitus due to an explosion. Years later, his hearing is deteriorating. is there a test that can show that the current hearing loss is due to the tinnitus? His intermediate hearing test results have been lost.

My understanding is that hearing loss can cause tinnitus but not the other way around.

Tinnitus is not due to anything in the ear. It is something in the brain. I'm pretty sure that hearing loss can be affected by tinnitus, though.

Hearing loss can result in tinnitus AND tinnitus can affect the hearing because the tinnitus noise distracts from hearing external sounds.
