Panic attacks following Depo-Provera birth control shot

Posted by chrisie23 @chrisie23, Aug 3, 2022

I started Depo-provera on the 1st of May. I have had a little bit of axiety but nothing unmanageable. 2 weeks ago just before I was due for my repeat shot I had a small panic attack, I didn't know what it was at the time and just took some stressaway and meds for my stomach. On the day I went for follow up shot I had 1 medium panick attack leading into a major one within 2h of having my shot. The doctor thinks I have panic disorder, is it possible that this is all because of the depo-provera?. Please help!!!

@ml2409, this sounds scary and very unsettling. Some people have reported mood changes, depression, and anxiety while using Depo-Provera, but the evidence that the shot causes these side effects is inconsistent.

You have found a place to vent when these moods strike, and panic or paranoia sets in. Writing it down can help not let it gain control. Has the propranolol helped with the heart rate? Have you found any breathing exercises or calming strategies to help you when you feel the panic coming on?

Hi Colleen,

There is now at mass tort for the injection causing an array of health concerns, including a meningioma usually on the R side of the brain. I also have severe depression, panic, anxiety and overwhelm with hormonal issues. It is scary dealing with the mood swings daily. I noticed no one has talked aout this topic since last year.
