Probiotic recommendations for c difficile infection

Posted by carolm13 @carolm13, Feb 19, 2022

In Dec. I got c diff after a round of antibiotics. Gastric Dr put me on Vancomycin but the symptoms came back in Jan. (Not as severe). I read about the benefits of Probiotics for c diff so I started taking them (Natures Bounty Probiotic 10, has 20 billion live cultures) in Jan. The problem is There are so many products out there and I wanted to know if there is a specific brand that helps with this illness. Some days I feel OK but others I have bloating, and lower abdominal pain. The diarrhea has abated.

Sorry to hear about your cdiff, I’ve had it for seven months struggling to get rid of it. My doc recommended Florajen not sure it’s been very effective. I read several others in different cdiff chats recommend s boulardii which I added to my daily regimen. Some probiotics have multiple ingredients so a separate one may not be needed. Someone recently mentioned Mega SporeBiotic I haven’t tried but am thinking about it. I see infectious disease on Thursday waiting to check with doc. Yogurt and things like Kefir are supposed to help. It’s a balance too much can worsen diarrhea. Good like praying yours goes away quickly. 🙏🏻

Thanks for the reply and my heart goes out to you. I can’t imagine this for 7 months… hugs.
I hope the specialist can get you the help you need to resolve this for once and for all.
I am now on vancomycin for 30 days. Can’t believe how expensive it is. So hope it does what is supposed to do. Any how, going to try HMF Multi Strain. It seems to have the key things in it. I just don’t want this to get worse… hopefully it will get better. But one thing you have to be an advocate for yourself. As I believe this should have been identified much sooner. Unfortunately two doctors including my own were not “listening “ to me. Thank god my doctor finally did! If you have a condition such as IBS you know how your body operates. This wasn’t IBS!

Here is an article from the Peggy Lillis Foundation. They mention 2 probiotics: Florastor and Bio K Plus for C Diff.

There is a lot of information on the Peggy Lillis Foundation website as well. Here is a statement from their website.
"We envision a world where C. diff is rare, treatable and survivable.
Peggy Lillis Foundation is building a nationwide C. diff (Clostridioides difficile) awareness movement by educating the public, empowering advocates, and shaping policy."

That is 100% true. I’ve been on all three cdiff meds including the Difficid which is the last one they try. This is my fourth time on vanco two 10-14 day doses followed by a six week taper then the difficid now back to vanco and a 10 week taper but it’s not going well. My GI is not doing anything more so I got a referral to a bigger hospital specialist two hours away can’t see me until 3/5 but finally got the GI to refer me to infectious disease. I guess fecal transplants can’t occur until you’re deathly ill now for some reason so frustrating. 100% we have to be our own advocates and keep pushing to find the right docs and treatments. Hopefully the probiotics you found and meds do the job for you praying for good things!
