Prednisone or Diet?

I’m a very active 75 male who came down with PMR 3 1/2 months ago. I’m currently on 10mg down from 15mg. I’m kinda of a health freak and as soon as I found out I had PMR I said I was going to come back from this healthier than before. So I went on a low inflammatory diet (low sugar, salt , processed foods and no alcohol and regular exercise.
I currently feel better than before getting PMR and lost my lower leg edema. I am wondering how much of this is due to prednisone or diet? I hope much of it is diet so when I get off of prednisone I still feel good.

Great question! It certainly helped me to reduce the amount of time before my PMR went into remission the second time it reared it's ugly head in my life - 3-1/2 years the first time and only 1-1/2 years the second time. Going on 7 years since it went into remission. I didn't pay much attention to it the first time I had PMR and the weight gain was around 20+ pounds. Good luck on your PMR journey and keep up the healthy eating and exercise!

I am also in my 70’s, 11 months into tapering prednisone, now down to 4 mg, tapering at 0.5 mg every month. First attack of PMR. I started the Wahls protocol about 4 weeks ago with the hope that it will minimize my risk of relapse. Will keep you posted.

I am 71 and happen to be a registered dietitian and have had a lot to say on this subject--there are many threads in this forum on PMR and diet. I truly think it helped me recover quickly. I only had a mild case to begin with because I only hurt while laying in bed! It all started soon after my 2nd COVID vaccination. I tapered off 10 mg. of Prednisone in about a year and had one replapse when I came down with COVID, but got of Prednisone within a few months. I eat a whole foods, primarily plant-based diet, high in inflammatory foods and I exercise 6 days a week--aquatic fitness, pilates, and cardio dance. Good luck in your recovery.
