Has anyone with an ileostomy dealt with nonstop nausea?
I’m 1 year into my permanent ileostomy and have done really well since August until nausea hit me 3 weeks ago and it’s been relentless. I used Zofran shortly after my surgery a year ago for occasional nausea but this is different and nausea medications have done very little to help. Seems to get a bit better in the afternoons but the mornings are the worse. It’s not affected my appetite really or caused me to lose weight or kept me awake at night but it’s basically constant and I’m tired of it. Fortunately I got an appointment with my gastro dr for next week but wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. I have noticed that my output is much less than normal but no pain is involved like an obstruction would be and I’ve had obstructions so I know what they feel like and know that my output stopped with an obstruction. I’m praying it’s not related to that issue. Any ideas?

@yvetteh, sorry to hear about the new development with nausea. I'm tagging a few ostomates like @pjebp @hardingv @g13 @terrihodges @cjay who may have some ideas and experiences to share with you. Or even to help make a list of questions to ask your gastro.
Yvette, have you been tracking your symptoms, when they happen and possible triggers? Have you noticed any patterns?
I’m really sorry to hear that you’re suffering from this nausea. It’s one of the few side-effects I didn’t get, so I’m afraid I have no ideas…….😔 I did see a Registered Dietitian about some other issues and she was very helpful. Perhaps an idea if your Gastro Dr. doesn’t come up with much. Good luck and sending you good vibes xo
Yes, I’ve been tracking symptoms for over 3 weeks now and each day is about the same. I never wake up with nausea but it usually kicks in mid morning every day after breakfast and is the worse during that time. In the past, when I’ve had occasional nausea, Zofran has always taken it away immediately so I assumed it would work for this but although it would dull it a little it never took it totally away. I just assumed that it was some sort of bug and would work its way out but after it went on for 2 weeks I started wondering if it was something more. I’ve had an obstruction so I know those symptoms of belly pain and no output. I don’t have any belly pain but I have started to notice that my output has lessened quite a bit the past several days and I’ve met with my GP and my ostomy nutritionist and they both think it’s worth talking this through with my gastro dr who I see tomorrow. My nutritionist thinks it’s a possibility that I do have a possible obstruction or adhesion forming and the gastro dr will likely suggest a CT scan unless he comes up with something else. I just know I can’t continue with this nausea day after day. My afternoons and evenings are less intense but very seldom does it go totally away although it has on occasion but comes right back the next day. I’m getting worried about what I’ll hear tomorrow.
I'm so sorry you are having this problem. I haven't had issues, and when I hear about others having nausea it is usually in connection with an obstruction. However the nausea in those cases is more immediate and does not continue at a lower level for an extended period like yours.
Putting aside the ostomy, is there any reason to think it might be acid reflux? Although I don't know why that might affect output.
Also, I presume you didn't have any recent changes in diet?
And have you ever had any problems with food allergies?
I hope you find some answers and quickly.
Actually, my GP and ostomy nutritionist both suspected “silent” reflux and recommended Pepsid AC 20mg in the morning an hour before I eat and I just started that regimen just 3 days ago and no difference so far but my GP said it could take a week to help so I’m holding out hope that it will help the nausea. However, that does not address the lower output I’ve been having for a week or so. No diet changes; no food allergies and no new medications except the addition of Pepsid and Atarax as needed to help control the nausea. I’m just praying I get answers this morning from my gastro dr and PRAY this is not any kind of obstruction!! Been there, done that! And never want to go through that again!!
Interesting, I have been getting that at times for last couple years, and only change for me is Acid reflux/Gerd that has increased.
my output hasn't decreased much.
Thanks Yvetteh, and let us know what you find out.
Good luck

My husband started taking hydroxyzine (Atarax) a few months ago for extreme itchiness as a byproduct of immunotherapy. He switched to another antihistamine because it made his throat extremely dry, particularly at night. That certainly wouldn't be helpful for silent reflux.
Good luck!
@hardingv yes I have had ongoing nausea. Typically hangs on and eventually goes away. Good luck at the doctors.
I’ve had ongoing nausea for 5 weeks now with no relief. Anti-nausea meds not working. I’m wondered if anyone has experienced that type of nausea; not just occasional nausea and if so, what was the treatment or the diagnosis?
Nauseous in the hospital, but once I got vertical it went away. I projectiled in the hospital and it was sudden; poor nurses. She held my hair back. Bahaha.
Nothing since. Lots of walking cures all... 🙂
