My daughter had terrible stomach pains and went to the hospital turns out she had Cecal volvulus and got emergency surgery. She had no problems before this. Now it has been 7 weeks since the surgery . What are foods that you should eat and what foods should you not eat? Several foods she tries she gets diarrhea. No stomach pains or anything . Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

I had a similar experience almost 4 years ago: cecal volvulous, emergency surgery, about 5 feet of my terminal ileum removed, and almost month of TPN. My surgeon recommended a book by Carol Rees Parish, RD, called A Patient's Guide to Managing Short Bowel. Even if your daughter does not have SBS as a resu.t of her volvulous, the book explains the different functions of the GI tract well and relates it to dietary recommendations. This is an important time, too, as the small intestine has remarkable ability to adapt to losses in length by increasing the number of cilli, as this, surface area able to absorb nutrients. I did well with gentle foods like Graham crackers, pasta, breads, cooked soft veges, fruit with no skin, etc in the beginning, but everyone is so different and it matters what part of her intestine she lost and how much. I also was on loperamide 2 mg tab.ets, taken 30 minutes before eating, but only for the first 4 to 5 months, then I no longer needed it. If you can connect with a Registered Dietician who specializes in SBS that would be extremely helpful. Many are wi.ling and able to work with you remotely if you do not have someone in your area. Best wishes and God bless.
