Barrett’s esophagus: Your tips and treatment?

Posted by wmbcat @wmbcat, Mar 7, 2022

I have BE but can’t take PPIs or H2 Blockers. I’ve developed a cough. How do I treat it?

I can’t tolerate ppi’s either. Would like alternative

Hi
Barretts is associated or the precursor to esophogial cancer. When I was diagnosed 20 years ago it was recommended to have a Fundo. I was scared of cancer so I agreed. The reflux and regurg was destroying my life. It worked for 10 years still taking otc omeprazole. Then I found out the wrap was no longer intact. 3 more surgeries later I found myself at Mayo Jacksonville with absolutely no hope. All the drugs, all the tests (there were many), nothing worked. For 25 years I suffered. And what I found out was that I had .003 chance of getting cancer. I'm not saying I was misdiagnosed or that the procedures didn't help, but none of this actually fixed the problem of long term Gerds.
At Mayo clinic they found that the previous surgeries had damaged my esophogus and caused a large 7cm hiatal hernia.
Finally in May I had a special bariatric surgery that ACTUALLY fixed me. No reflux or bile in my throat. Can u imagine after 25 years of suffering 3 months later I am feeling real good!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have BE with high dysplasia. I have had two ablations and I am scheduled for my next endoscopy in Feb.
I am on 40 mgs of omeprazole, twice a day. That has alleviated any GERD I was having. I have cut out coffee and other acidic foods. Hopefully, the actions taken will prevent things from progressing.

No issues from the ablation? I had it done and I now have LPR

I have had two ablations. It took about two weeks for them to heal and for me to go back to eating solid food. There have been no lingering issues.

I drink alkaline water and use it to spray my throat to kill off the digestive enzyme pepsin. I also use the alginate Gaviscon Advance, UK version, which stung at first from its sodium but now is soothing. Low acid, whole food diet is helpful for many people, maybe for you two. There is a FB page with many recipes, I think it's called the Acidwatchers Diet Warriors Group. Dr. Jamie Koufman has a lot of free info on her web site. Dr. Jonathan Aviv has a lot of info scattered about the internet. Maybe also look into vagus nerve damage as causing the coughing?

I do all the above and my cough is gone. I started the Acid watchers diet warrior support group on Facebook March of 2024. It follows Dr Avivs book and findings. I also have Dr Koughmans books Good luck!
Alkaline water suggested above is an absolute for me 😉
