Do you use a special thickening product with his food? I use the Protein Drink for my spouse also. He coughs a non- productive cough. I usually cut his food before it is on the table. He has been eating really fast..which by the way he did not do before Parkinson's. He says he has to eat the food before it gets cold. Reasoning with this issue is pointless. He just ends up burning his tongue. If I put food cooler he says it is too cold. So I cannot reason with him because I think he does realize what he is saying. Frustrating. I am a small person and a Hiemlick maneuver would not be possible. I know how ..but. I have talked to him about aspiration pneumonia. Still no change. Any other ideas?

Swallowing problems are difficult to deal with, @sillyblone. I have swallowing problems due to a paralyzed vocal cord. I have found that holding my breath when drinking helps. It sounds counter-productive, but I've mentioned it to otolaryngologists and speech therapists. They explained to me why it works. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name they gave the process but it is an acceptable way to handle this problem.

It does take a willingness to try something different and not all people are flexible or accepting of new ways of doing everyday tasks that have come naturally in the past.
