EBRT Simulation failed two CT scans because of gas
I had an EBRT radiation simulation yesterday but two CT scans indicated the presence of gas. Did anyone experience this before? Bowel was clean and the bladder was sufficiently full. Dietitian called me immediately after these results and recommended a low gas diet before my next simulation on February 6, 2025. Any suggestions, advice, etc greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes direct experience with this.
Your R/O should have given you specific guidance on diet, what to drink not drink, supplements, etc. I got my proton radiation treatment at UFHPTI. My R/O went over the above and was handed phamplet with all that information also included in it with directions to read and help them help me.
The day before one treatment I added protein supplement to a meal. I did not think anything about it. That day on table getting treatment they came in and said they were dealing with gass in my colon and trouble stablizing the picture of the prostate because of movement. They finally got my treatment done.
After they went over my diet and I said was following but had added protein supplement. They asked what it was. I said soy bean. Yes they said a bean. It will cause gas. So I learned,
You are talkiing about the simulation bed where the align up where you will be placed to keep the treatments treating the designated areas. That is where you drank water, empty bowels, etc. If you had gas it will press outwark and cause prosate to move around. This comes from my R/Os at UFHPTI who have been doing prostate radiation treatments since 2006.
Per my R/Os no beans, nothing that will cause gas. I think you can research the diet needed to follow. If not asked for a print out of elimination of specific foods to prevent this from happening.
As johnny stated, research a low gas diet. I followed one and also took Gas-x the night before and the morning of treatment.
Stay Strong Brother, we got this.
It looks like my following a nutritional plan of healthy eating for years, whole grains, oatmeal, a variety of vegetables and fruits, lean meats, etc may have to change temporarily. Not looking forward to white bread, pasta, and low fiber stuff.
Yep.....I was right there with you. Fortunately it was only for two weeks with my SBRT, but veggies and fruit were replace with just that........"wonder bread" and pasta.
I don't quite get the comments regarding fruits and veggies. While I was undergoing EBRT, I took particular care to include a lot of fiber in my diet so that I could empty my bowel each morning before my treatment. My treatments were scheduled for 8:00 am. My routine was to get up at 6:00 am and fix a cup of coffee to get things moving. Followed that up with the 20 ounces of water I was supposed to drink to get my bladder filled to the level they wanted.
Across 28 treatments, I had one day that they took me off the table because I had gas in my rectum. Walked down the hall with one of the techs on my way to the restroom, farted (out loud), she smiled and said "Alright then - we're good to go!" And we went back to the table and finished up the treatment.
I was surprised to find out that oatmeal would cause gas. I had to eat eggs every morning when getting radiation.
You are truly the only person I’ve heard this from; everyone I’ve met - including yours truly - was put on a very strict diet of no fermentable fiber - beans, cruciferous veggies, whole grains, dried fruit, nuts….all the good stuff we’ve been told to eat for the last 50 years.
The changing room at Sloan always had at least one frustrated patient who was thrown off the table because of gas. I even had to give myself an enema one day because I drank Smooth Move Herbal tea and the tech claimed I had a huge gas bubble in my colon which I didn’t even feel.
But having no gas is key to avoiding radiation proctitis down the road.
My radiologist started me on GASX one pill after every meal starting three days before trst
There are eight million stories in the naked city of how to manage, or mis manage, the "mostly empty rectum" requirement. This is one of them.
Everyone has their own formula. I tried to slip in a small amount of my usually large servings of greens and veggies. And took a GasX at night.
Or, go with the non-gas medical diet recommendation synopsis:
Double Whopper w/ cheese and fries, hold the lettuce and pickle, 3x daily.
Good luck. All of us struggle, but somehow figure it out and complete treatment. 😊
Thanks for the suggestion. I bought Gas-X yesterday. Hope it does the trick.
