Can neuropathy in my feet cause balance problems?

Posted by oliver4 @oliver4, Dec 15, 2022

Podiatrist has diagnosed me with minor neuropathy but my balance is worsening. Can neuropathy cause this. I know that input from the feet can cause balance problems

I have idiopathic neuropathy. For years by feet have had tingling and burning sensations, but no numbness, I could, and still can, feel floors/ground underneath me. But lately it seems to have moved into my ankles which makes them feel sort of weak. This weak feeling has affected my balance - its more tenuous. Anyone else have this and did you find any functional resolutions? I have tried wearing ankle braces and they sort of help but at night my ankles are more fired up which can affect my ability to get to sleep? Any ideas out there? And thanks in advance.

I take2 lasic in the morning & 1in the afternoon. This helps keep the swelling down to a minimum.

My balance got bad from chemo and I have peripheral neuropathy. I recently got an under the desk elliptical on Amazon for $109 and it has greatly improved my balance.

@janiern2 - When I first read your post, I thought my wife wrote this. I have axonal PN as well and I've been wearing the carbon walk-on flex by Ottobock since 2020. My bilateral drop foot started suddenly in 2019 and after falling flat on my face several times in 2019, I knew something had to change. At first, I did experience discomfort. I wear my AFO's with sneaks and when I went to an extra wide sneaker, the discomfort went away. I found the sneaks offer my flexibility when walking, not high tops, just normal low-cut work well for me. Ed

Hi Ed. Thank you for the information. I will relay this to my husband. I am also looking into an external AFO by Turbo Med Orthotics. Wishing you the best and thanks again!

Applying Suave lotion with Aloe and Cucumber extract sold by grocery stores from their shelf, helps my burning and at times twitching sensation in feet and ankles. Apply the lotion generously, wrap in loose towel; no socks and sleep well.
