Hi,
I found your post and was just wondering how you got to have bone marrow biopsy before being given the Hydrea. I have high platelets that were first found about one month ago and no JAK2 gene. It just seems excessive for doctor to be giving Hydrea so fast. I have no previous cardiovascular events. I did just turn Medicare age. Honestly, I do not feel age alone is a terrible risk factor. I take nothing but vitamins and exercise about 45 minutes daily walking and biking. I would just like to confirm exactly what I have before taking medication.

I had a bone marrow biopsy before talking meds. They used it to confirm my JAK12 positive & they confirmed that I don't have any other genes that currently show possible mutation for leukemia or anything else. I don't take anything besides baby Aspirin right now. I'm considered low risk since I'm only 48 & have had no previous issues.

My hematologist wanted the bone marrow biopsy first to confirm the ET diagnosis before starting me on HU. He wanted to be sure I didn’t have some other blood disorder or leukemia before starting on HU. And higher age correlates strongly with having a higher risk for stroke or heart attack with an ET diagnosis which is why we are considered high risk at age 65.
