Biotin and Hair & Skin health

Posted by naiviv @naiviv, Nov 29, 2024

Hello. I was wondering if by any chance anyone has been having issues with thinning and hair loss. I am 72 and I under sorry it is part of aging but I have been reading about Biotin for hair loss and skin health. As we age we start to lose nutrients that are needed for good health. Has anyone tried Biotin supplements ? And which are the good brands? Thank you.

I take one-half of the 2.5 Minoxidil everyday and I have significant new growth. I will increase dosage soon.

What did you dislike about the finesteride? I have the option of that as well.

Hi! I recently lost 120 lbs over 2.years, slowly and sensibly. Suddenly I'm losing half my hair! Biotin and collagen slowed the fall but it's just not coming back. It's been a year. I take 10,000 of biotin daily. It's just not working. I have tried everything from nutrients to supplements to topicals. Nothing. I've had all the blood work done, thyroid checks, you name it. Everything looks fine and ive paid some pretty high prices on things that just don't work. And yes i took them over long periods to give them a chance to work.
Someone finally suggested ( I watch my diet and "macros" and weightlift, that I might not be getting enough good fats in my diet. Made sense! I once lost a lot of weight due to another problem. When the problem resolved I lost my hair again but started eating my old way. The weight came back but so did my hair. Full curly and lustrous! Now ive lost the weight again (plain discipline this time) and bye bye hair! I've recently heard it's cause it's lack of good fats and oils. It's a catch 22 because nuts, seeds, avocado etc are great but quite high calorie. Anyone else battling this?

I posted about WEEM earlier in the thread. I started with one gummy though the suggested dose is two daily. I am small. It is having amazing results for hair loss (and nails). I took it for a few weeks and stopped and the hair loss continued to be much less. Then I started up again with half daily for maintenance. I was having large handfuls of hair coming out in the shower and now it is just a few strands. WEEM has high dose biotin and some B vitamins.

I do sympathize. Hair loss is very distressing. Congratulations on your weight loss!

I might check with your doctor about the high dose of biotin and make sure it’s ok. Also, did they check B12 levels? Low B12 can cause loss. I was deficient in B12 and take a high dose of that.

I lost a large amount of weight too last year over a relatively short time. So, not sure if that caused my shedding or if something else, like the low B12, my post covid syndrome or something else. My dermatologist and endocrinologist aren’t sure, but thought due to rapid weight loss. So I’m on Minoxidil oral tablets. It’s proven to be effective. Have you seen a dermatologist?

I have also seen two nutritionists about ensuring my diet is sound and able to fuel my body, yet support my weight loss goals. I’m one pound from my goal. I focus on nutrition with my diet, as well as my supplements. I take Vitamin D and Fish oil too, per my doctor’s recommendation. I think you can have all the nutrients and lose weight. I count calores.

I hope you find something that helps.

Biotin can affect some blood tests. Definitely check with MD. I was nervous about a full dose, took 1/2 dose for a few weeks which was surprisingly effective (hair and nails!) and am now taking 1/4 for maintenance after skipping a week or two. I have kidney disease and had already checked with my nephrologist on B vitamins.

@windyshores I too began taking WEEM a couple of months ago. I have noticed that I haven't had to clean out my brush in over a week, and when I "wring" my hair out in the shower there are times that I don't even get a single strand left on my hands. I'm very pleased with the results!

I had excessive hair shedding after substantial, rapid weight loss. I was also diagnosed with B12 deficiency. So not sure of exact cause, even after extensive blood work. (Hopefully, it will resolve on its own, but I can’t be sure so sought help.) I discussed it with my dermatologist and she prescribed Minoxidil. I take it in pill form. I also began Vitamin B12 treatment. She says the only fda approved treatments for hair loss are Minoxidil and Finasteride. I use a shampoo with biotin that I like. I am no longer shedding excessively, but I don’t think it’s due to the shampoo,

Has the Minoxidil caused a growth of facial hair?

Two strands of hair in the shower last night. Used to be a handful. Hair seems to be growing back in front. Nails are very hard, not cracking. I did a two days of 1/2 dose and am back to 1/4 dose and WEEM is still working.

When it comes to brands, there are a few well-reviewed ones, like Nature’s Bounty, Solgar, and Kirkland Signature. They’re all known for being high-quality and reliable. However, it’s a good idea to also check with your doctor to make sure it’s right for you, especially if you have any other health conditions or medications. Best of luck, I hope it helps you feel better!

Yes it has. I’ve noticed hair growth in several places on my face. I’ve been tweezing and considering a depilitator. I saw one on line, but it’s now unavailable. I’ll eventually explore permanent hair removal there. I’ll still take the med though. To me, it’s worth it.
