What happens after Tymlos?

Posted by alknapp @alknapp, Feb 21, 2024

I’m going to be finishing the 18 month course of Tymlos in April/May of this year. Endo is saying that I should follow that with Prolia (within weeks) and then Reclast.

Has anyone else followed that treatment plan or have any comments about it?

Thank you.

@lhankins I use a keyboard. My brain does this thing where it puts the wrong letters first. Loved the humor. Castle-Connolly is safe from litigation from me 🙂

I transpose numbers and letters constantly! I am trying to focus more on the task at hand. It’s not easy with my noisy, distracted brain.

Hi Chris! Thank you for your comment. I also have Dr. Wermers and am getting ready to end my two-year treatment with Tymlos in March. He has also recommended Fosamax, which I am leaning towards taking. Did you consider or research any other treatments like Reclast that I see in this post? Do you have a sense of how long you'll stay on Fosamax? Thanks for your help!

I have one more year with Tymlos. I'm glad to hear that Dr. Wermers recommends Fosamax for some people. By next year, I will hopefully be well into osteopenia range (I'm -2.0 now), and I think I'd be more comfortable with Fosamax vs. an infusion. The latter makes me nervous because it's like jumping out of a plane and you pray your parachute opens. 🙂

Thanks so much for your response Chris!

I need Tymlos but cannot afford it but don’t qualify for Radius’aid. May I ask if you found help through another source?

My friend was able to get financial assistance from Forteo for her Forteo Rx. They paid part of it. She couldn't get financial assistance for Tymlos, but they are pretty much the same drug except with Tymlos, you can customize the dose if needed so you take less than the full dose. I am currently taking Tymlos, for about 1.5 years and am doing very well on it. My insurance company pays for it other than a $50 copay.
I am surprised to see the # of patients on this forum whose doctors didn't do baseline markers of CTX, P1NP and other testing. My endocrinologist is thankfully very aware of their importance and tests me fairly frequently.
I will be going off Tymlos in a few months. My doctor has talked about my going on Prolia next, but with all the comments here, which I am very grateful for, along with information from Dr. Keith McCormick, I am very wary about the rebound effect from Prolia. So I will probably opt for Reclast to lock in my gains from Tymlos.

All of my "aging" problems occured after stopping HRT. I did Bio-Identical HRT for 8 or 10 years. I did it topically (rubbing it into the skin.) It worked GREAT for me. For all the "girlie" problems - to maintain skin, muscles and bones. Hormones keep us youthful. However, I had to balance cancer risks with estrogen products so the bioidenticals were the answer - to be compounded in the proportions I needed. The first year was finding the right combo of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in the right amounts. I was very pleased. It was a bit of a struggle to get it all in place. But I used so little every day that it wasn't expensive (I had to pay out of pocket). Kept EVERYTHING in the right balance. I highly recommend it!

Would you mind if I asked your age? I'm 74 and never did HRT and was told it wouldn't be effective for me for osteoporosis to start it now. But I would sure prefer that to Prolia or even Reclast, once I finish with Tymlos. Thanks!

I am scheduled for a Reclast infusion in a few weeks after a two year successful treatment regime of Tymlos, that ended two weeks ago. I have tons of dentistry that has been done through the years, and any of it can have an unplanned problem at any time. I am back to being unsure about the once a year infusion as this site indicates no major dentistry for 3 to 5 years.
What about HRT for a 72 year old woman in good health with no history of cancer?
I just spoke to a pharmacist who suggested that I could take Boniva starting now, which would lock in the gains I got from Temlos.
It’s already been two weeks without any osteo medication which I don’t know how quickly my bone density gains recede, without any medication. I called the help line at Temlos, who said they were a 3 rd party partner and had no idea about any questions I may have.
Clearly, many of you are very knowledgeable on this topic, and I so appreciate your expertise!
