You probably like many of us have a body that over responds to irritations and viruses like colds. The body makes mucus to try and wash out the irritant or virus.
If you have a good PCP or ENT that can recommend medications and OTCs that are specific to you. You have to be careful with some medications as they affect BP and and other medical conditions.
You mentioned laying down. I have been told and what I do is sleep or lay down with my head raised. The object is to keep mucus drainage from going down your throat to going out your nose. That way it also improves your cought and throat irritations.
I also have allergies and can feel like I am drowning in phlegm also when it acts up. With me once I start coughing it irratates my bronchia tubes and thus start coughing more.
I do take medication when this happens to calm my bronchial tubes down. I also take a daily nose spray to reduce nasal irritations. But having a cold that is a virus and your body is going to produce a lot of mucus.
If you can talk to your doctors they can provide you with prescriptions or OTCs to help you. If you can't get to doctor or have one you can also talk to your local pharmcist about some good OTCs you can take to help you.
Hope you feel better.
lotsofpain, This has been an incredibly hard winter for allergies & sinus in our area. I use Flonase and Azteline (Sp?) sprays. I also run a cool mist humidifer in my bedroom and a hepa filter to filter the air in the den. I run a hepa filter in my bedroom BUT not at the same time that I run the cool mist humidifier. You aren't supposed to run them together.
I feel like I'm drowning in mucus too when I wake up in the morning. I elevate my head and do not sleep flat at night as this makes it worse. I have sneezed so much this winter, sinus pressure & headaches more than usual and consant throat clearing. I have to say this has been one of the hardest winters I have had in a long time.
Have you tried irrigating your sinuses with the NeilMed Sinus rinse? It's about $10. It helps get rid of the extra mucus & irritants in your sinuses. I also use Children's Zyrtec 2.5 ml at night to help. NAC is good drying mucus as well. You cannot take both of them together as they can be too drying to your sinus & eyes. Ask your doctor before using please.
My primary told me that allergies were really bad this year. I think a lot of it is our weather being back and forth so much. Our air has not been as clean outside this year either.
Water is a natural mucus thinner, so drink lots of water.
Go see an ENT doctor as their may be something else going on and you could have developed a sinus infection from your cold.
I wish you the best because it is tiring. Blessings & Prayers.
For over a week I had a sinus infection with lots of abnormal, green phlegm. I finally saw a nurse practitioner at an urgent-care clinic. After doing (negative) swabs for Covid and RSV, she gave me an Rx for an antibiotic. I felt better after only two doses, but when I had finished the prescription, I still had a lot of clear phlegm. I treated that successfully with Claritin and Flonase in the morning and Tylenol Nighttime at bedtime. The latter helped me get a good night’s sleep. I continue to elevate my head, and I run a humidifier.
I know the feeling. Every night before bed, I take my omepresol (Prilosec??) and an non-stimulating anti-histamine. That’s been a game changer. At least making things manageable.
But check with your PCP first. I came up with the combo with his help.
I have had constant phlegm for nearly 3 years. Have gone to doctors in Tyler,Dallas, Longview and Shreveport and had numerous tests and nothing has helped . It’s hard to eat and I have lost over 20 lbs. I am at a loss as to where or what to do now.
I wake up choking from the phlegm even sleeping in a recliner. I found out my sphincter going into my stomach isn’t working and will need to have the stomach pulled up and sewed about 270 degrees around that sphincter I would wake choking with cpap on so I can’t wear it and I’m a severe snorer.
