Prolia discontinuation

Posted by czauderer @czauderer, Dec 12, 2024

Hi, due to an osteoporosis diagnosis, I took two injections of Prolia six months apart and due two side effects, I want to come off of it. I do not want to transition to a bisphosphonate or remain on one. How do I take myself off of Prolia safely? I am not getting a straight answer from my doctor.

@windyshores

@whiteswan I think there are two shots because the full dose doesn't fit in one syringe! They do it in arms, belly or in my case thighs.

Thank you Windyshores for the answer. Really if a nurse is i good person, than a patient sensitive as me can do only one shot as Gently told.

As one doctor (not an OP doctor) told me, I can always refuse the second shot. I prefer to make arrangements in advance so hopefully the second syringe can be saved for the next month.

@normahorn I tried that. They cannot save it for the next month.

You (via an insurance company) paid for it so it should be your property.

If I do Evenity again, I might try bringing a cooler and taking it home. But that may not be allowed (liability concerns about us injecting ourselves?). The office won't store it.

I can't remember exactly but I believe I paid less when I did one shot.

I wish we could just inject ourselves at home. Not sure why not. It's IM. I would do 1 1/3 which is my optimal dose!

Hi, Evenity and Prolia are both Sub-Q, not IM. I have had both meds.
“Subcutaneous (SQ or Sub-Q) injection means the injection is given in the fatty tissue, just under the skin.” (from website)

I’m not sure there is an answer. If your bone density is normal you’ll be safe for a few months. I am being tested for the jaw disease osseocronisus from Prolia and have no choice. I may have to go in Tymlos of Forteo or risk bone fractures in my back. I’m sorry I ever started, but unfortunately once you go on these meds you go downhill and the consequences are not good. Everything I read is bad news and worse. If my Medicare drug plan does not cover this drug it will cost me a fortune and there are side effects as well. I hope someone comes up with something else.

@laujodrik I have been told that Tymlos and Forteo are not very effective after Prolia. If you have jaw necrosis I can see that Reclast would not be a good option but I wonder if you could do at least some Evenity. Does your doctor suggest Tymlos or Forteo?

@sandrac sorry of course, Evenity is sub-cutanteous. Apologies! All the more reason to let us do it at home (and we could adjust the dose!)
