15 year old grandson just diagnosed with Crohns disease
Upsetting news, we hear that the shots are extremely expensive, and I don't know how much insurance covers.

I’m no expert, but it’s my understanding that children who have serious, chronic conditions they often qualify for coverage through Medicaid. The parents might explore the options with an advocate organization or social worker.
Best wishes for your grandson and your family.
Hi, @jrayk.
Currently, as part of the Affordable Care Act, children are allowed to stay on their parents' healthcare insurance until the age of 26. With that being said;
1. As you have implied, how expensive it will be is going to depend on how the insurance company covers treatment for your grandson. And that wil vary from insurance company to insurance company and from policy to policy.
2. The provision for children staying on their parents' policy until age 26 could go away if the Affordable Care Act is revised to remove that provision.
One other thing that could give you a little additional information is to check with your grandson's medical faciltiy to find out their cots for the injections. They are required by law to post online pricing information about the services that they provide. Once you find out that information, you can go from there to find out how much of it his parents' insurance will or will not cover.
I hope that helps a little. Meanwhile, all the best to you and your grandson.
I have a few friends with Chron's. Hopefully your grandson's gastroenterologist can give detailed info on treatment options and the insurance co. on costs. I've had a different type, collagenous colitis for 8 years. Mine is controlled by diet (no gluten, legumes [beans], or NSAIDs [aspirin]); I currently taking Budesonide short term for flares caused by stress (other health stuff). Stress and diet hit colitis pretty hard and I hope you and your family have support for what you are going through. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9357-crohns-disease
Crohn's can be a real bear, especially when it starts young. I have had it for over 40 years but I am now symptom and medication free. I am convenced that Low Dose Naltrexone was the answer for me. Look it up and see what you think. It can be used with other treatments.
There are great programs from the drug companies to cover the cost the insurance doesn't cover.
