Probiotics for SIBO?
My elderly (90yo) mother is kept up at night by stomach gas and belching. She had a positive lactulose breath test based on an early hydrogen rise at 90 min. She has been offered a rifaximin Rx but prefers to avoid antibiotics. Is there a probiotic regimen that might help?

Good luck finding one. Most of the doctors around my area haven't even heard of SIBO and when my gastro sent me to a nutritionist she said there are no diets or products that will help. Just go on the antibiotics. Unfortunately they just don't kill SIBO, at least it hasn't happened for me.
It will help. Get some fodzymes and you can eat more food.
I should mention that the antibiotics i use is best for methane sibo and
the other one is best for hydrogen
Sorry, I meant to say the anti biofilm is best for methane, not antibiotics
I know of some herbal treatments For SIBO BUT THEY ARE NOT CHEAP AND THEY MAY COME WITH SOME SIDE EFFECTS FOR SOME PEOPLE. I KNOW SEVERAL DIFFERENT REGIMENTS, BUT I DON’T THINK I CAN PUT THEM HERE IN THE IN THIS BLOG.
Give it a try and let's see what you've learned. You have to be careful with probiotics. Some aren't good for sibo like anything with lactobacillus. I use megaspore and phgg
Hi,
As one who suffers SIBO regularly antibiotics are the only way to kill it off. I have success with Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole for 2 weeks. It leaves a taste in the mouth which eventually goes a few days after the course then the SIBO is gone. From my experience playing with it only prolongs the discomfort and does not cure the problem. I can't say I like antibiotics either, I'm normally reluctant to take medication, but when backed into a corner there is not much choice.
Cheers
Limit fiber intake as discussed above
- Recommend official small intestinal bacterial overgrowthe testing with glucose substrate
- If positive, recommend continuation of a low FODMAP diet with abx or herbal treatment
The patient is at risk for recurrent small intestinal bacterial overgrowth which could be contributing to her chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction .
- If recurrent small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, recommend cycling antibiotics (preferred rifaximin 550mg three times day) for the 1st week of each month or continuing the herbal supplements.
Pick one combination (this can be found in a supplement store or amazon.com):
Choice A: Candibactin-AR plus Candibactin BR
Dose: 2 tabs (for each preparation) twice a day x 8 wks [total of 4 pills twice a day]
OR
Choice B: Dysbiocide plus FC cidal
Dose: 2 tabs (for each preparation) twice a day x 8 wks [total of 4 pills twice a day]
The above were shown in clinical trials to be effective.

However, if you are not able to tolerate the above or if you are unable to find the above, try the following:
Gaia or Nature’s Way brand Oil of Oregano -1 capsule twice daily with meals
PLUS (choose one below):
2. Berberine [Thorne] 500 mg capsules, 3 capsules (1500 mg) twice daily for 8 weeks OR Oregon Grape root [Nature's Way] 500 mg capsules, three capsules (1500 mg) twice a day with meals.
Note that Oil of Oregano by itself would not be effective.

For any of the preparations above:
Add Dandelion root tea daily (such as brand Traditional Medicinals). This can help move your gut and can help stimulate bile which has some antimicrobial effect.
I’m glad that you have found ways that help you deal with SIBO. What are your symptoms when you have SIBO?
Hi,
I get severe bloating with acute pain throughout the abdominal region. I find it difficult to bend at the waist and resort to slouching rather than trying to sit. An acidic feeling in the stomach with reflux that strips the lips of the top layers of skin. Just before the reflux my mouth gets quite sticky like chewing glue and the spital thickens, this is usually the first sign I'm heading into SIBO. We have never been able to treat the symptoms successfully and had to attack the cause head on deploying antibiotics and a diet that helps eliminate food feeding the SIBO. Like grains, peas, cabbage, anything that promotes gas. I keep a course of antibiotics on hand so I can get stuck into treatment way before I can get an appointment and script from my Dr.
Cheers
