Losartan

Hi, folks. Was moved from metoprolol to Losartan this week. I would appreciate hearing about your experience with this medication. Any volunteers? Thank you.

I was started on the tartrate. Never felt good while on it, plus there were disputes about when to withhold it. After I switched to the succinate, I felt better and there were no more problems. My doctor started me on Losartan about a year after I started Metoprolol. I've never had problems with it.

At the advice of my family physician I took low-dose (25 mg) losartan for many years (about 5!). I had stents installed at the Mayo last summer and in followups with the cardiology group losartan came up. It was in the context of my complaints "dizziness" after standing. This has been a long-term compliant and seemed to be getting worse. After review by the Mayo group I was advised to stop losartan. I was told that the dose I was taking was not likely to have an impact on my blood pressure and a common side effect is indeed "dizziness". I stopped and much to my delight I can stand without having my head spinning. In addition there has been no measurable effect on my blood pressure (up or down).

Hi. You don’t say why you are on Losartan, but out of the gate, that’s more targeted to regulating blood pressure than abnormal heart rates. And although metoprolol is used for BP as well, it is often used by EPs as a medication to alleviate or suppress PVCs and PACs or atrial flutter.

Were you having issues with metoprolol? I for one, could not take it. It made me a complete zombie… so bad I could barely stand up or speak or think! I had extreme vertigo. And they kept increasing the dose despite the side effects because it wasn’t working to regulate my multiple arrhythmias. I was taken off Losartan because between the two, my blood pressure was too low.

I was then switched to Diltiazem. That seemed to help a little bit more, and regulated my blood pressure. But it did not work to help keep Afib from occurring and I ended up in ER with HR of 170, afib, and PVC/PACs.
I was electrocardioverted and even that didn’t work. They put me on a continuous drip of diltiazem and that finally did the trick.

Needless to say, and for a variety of reasons, like being told I was over reacting to constant PVC/PAC activity, and not sleeping for three years because of the symptoms, I changed my EP and cardiac clinic.

Best thing I ever did. My arrhythmias are now managed by Flecainide and Diltiazem twice daily.

Hope things go smoothly for you and you are happy with the whatever results they are aiming to achieve via the Losartan.

Hello,

If you don't mind me asking, what was your blood pressure when it was too low?

I have been taking Losartan for a handful of years for high blood pressure and had no problems.

In 2023 I had an AFIB emergency and was diagnoses that time. Had tests, and supposedly my AFIB was not that bad and the doctor prescribed metoprolol. I haven't had issues, but in the last months, my bp has been dropping down to 110/60 ....or 107/60....and heart BPM hang out at about 67 to 70.

I've not been feeling well...kind of "floaty" and am thinking that my bp and bpm's are dropping too low for me.

I was about 40lbs heavier when the doctors had originally prescribed these meds and am thinking that they need to be changed.

Long story for you, for one little question. 😉

Thank you!
