How soon can one fly after TURBT? What is needed for at home care?

Posted by saaron79 @saaron79, Dec 22, 2024

Hi. My 83 year old dad was just diagnosed with bladder cancer. I decided to get him treated at Mayo Clinic. He is having the Turbt procedure done soon. any advice on downtime after the procedure and when we can fly back home? also what does home care look like since he is 83? all this is new to me and happening so fast.

Get prepared for overactive bladder syndrome. Which means frequent urination with little control when the urgency hits. Adult diapers with a men’s pad may become a necessity to avoid having to change clothes all the time. Amazon has some pretty reasonable price ones.

Thank you for the advice

The procedure itself is no big deal. He may have a little discomfort after but generally not. I cannot tell you when they will want to let him fly home, since he is 83 and ??? if frail, but should be able to go a few days after. No special care thereafter. He will need to be referred to a urologist at home so they put him on a 3 month cystoscopy schedule for the next year

@saaron79, how is your dad doing? How did the transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) go? Are you still at Mayo Clinic?

REPLY

Hi not so good. they couldn’t remove the entire oh sorry tumor cause it was too big so the doctor says he has to do chemotherapy and come back in four months to remove his bladder.

I am in a similar position. How have you chosen to treat at this point?

Hi
Went yesterday for 1st treatment. It went ok except he had a hard time holding in the meds and some came out. His next treatment with the gem will be thursday. This time they will keep a cathedar in and clap it off so the med all stays in and he will keep it on for 1 hour. So far he feels ok just tired.

no chemo. kidney functions are not good. next step is surgery to remove the bladder.
