Anal fissure: What helps it heal?

Hey-wondering if anyone has developed an anal fissure during chemotherapy? What helped it heal? Any advice as it is very painful!

@cahabagirl yes, Nifedipine compounded ointment is what healed my fissure - cost me around $70 because my government health plan didn’t cover it, but it was worth the out of pocket cost! It took six weeks of application three times a day.

I too developed constipation after my colonoscopy and had to remedy that first. That was why it took so long for the fissure to heal.

Someone else on here just recommended it to me. I saw it on Amazon for $34. Is that the same thing because I’m buying it the minute. Thank you. Diane.

When there is a tear or cut in the rectum there is a muscle called the sphincter muscle. Had I known this I would have been spared so much pain. Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxer and it works to relax that muscle. I’ve never used Botox but my doctor put me out…an absolute must and he administered steroid shots right into that muscle. But without that fissure being sewn up it takes a long time for it to heal. God bless. Diane.

Hello @adlttl123 - I so appreciate you sharing your experience, medication/treatment info., and well wishes! This is very helpful. I am working on healing this up with as many conservative measures as I can find. I've had a good four consecutive days and am optimistic I'm heading in the right direction. @adlttl123 as far as I know, Nifedipine is a compounded ointment under prescription so what you have seen on Amazon may not be the right thing. Lidocaine is an analgesic cream not a fissure healer.

@ruth2019 the label just says “Nifedipine 0.2% ointment compound” so I don’t know if a compound means it is a combination of other drugs. It was made up in a compounding pharmacy. I applied it internally, using a finger cot three times a day plus after a bowel movement. The ointment came in a pump dispenser which I found very convenient.

I am also used this after my radiation after using several other products this was by far the best I can’t believe the difference did you get yours at a compound pharmacy?

Sitz baths as much as you can. 50% of people can heal these on their own. I gave up after 6 weeks and had the surgery. Good luck to you. This is a monster.

I am also used this after my radiation after using several other products this was by far the best I can’t believe the difference did you get yours at a compound pharmacy?

@jeanadair123 yes, I got my Nifedipine ointment from a compounding pharmacy, with a prescription from my physician.

I'm afraid I don't know any medication that helps, as I was given a cream and gave me herendous headaches, so put me off. But when I drink more fluids through the day, helps because your stools are a bit looser.

After 14-1/2 years of sitting on a donut, I took an anti-seizure medication on an unrelated matter and in 2 weeks the pain was gone. My pelvic therapist said she had read that this works. It was Topamax. I took it off-label for a daily persistent headache. Helped my butt, but I still have the headache. Ask your doctor. Good luck.

Replaced toilet with a bidet style and fissures are now gone. But mine was on the outside. Don’t know about those inside. Love the bidet still btw.
