Waiting on drug approval

Posted by tomy @tomy, 1 day ago

I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma this December 9 24. I was supposed to start chemo January 6 but I am still waiting on drug approval. How long does this normally take? Should I not be starting chemo ASAP?

Sadly @tomy , this is more common than I like to think. You can call your insurance company directly and ask if it has been approved yet. When my husband was due to start revlomid in the beginning of his MM journey, the insurance company kept saying it was approved and the doctors office kept saying they didn’t have approval yet. It was so frustrating, I just kept asking what is the holdup. It did get figured out, because we were trying to be patient, my husband was 2 months past his “start date”. I would not recommend this approach, keep calling and keep asking.
May I ask what medicine you were due to start?

I was prescribed Besremi on December 25. I initiated the pre-authorization process with the health plan, but the hospital will not return my calls to give me the status. I enrolled with PharmaEssentia, which provides financial help to pay for Besremi, and they assigned me a caseworker to keep in touch with my doctor's office and the insurance company. Hang in there!

The Lenalidomide can be a point of hang up. This drug carries a triple black box warning, and it is only available through a couple of specialty mail order pharmacies. It also requires a few hoops to get. All of these except the dex are expensive drugs and will require some coordination. Call your prescribing doctors office and ask for an update, they will likely know where all of this stands.
