This testing was done from my primary care doc who is internal medicine physician. Before my physical in Sept 2024 she sent me a message on mychart stating this..platelets continue to be low, could be related to auto immune disorder. may need hematology consult to review low platelets. During my physical I assumed she would do referral to hematology but I never got referral. Also this was to be my last appt with her because she was moving to another practice to far for travel. I was assigned another internal med phys in same office but have not seen him yet. He has responded on mychart to things that were ordered from her but has said nothing about the hematology referral. I just wonder if they are waiting for another lab result in March 2025 and at what point a person should be referred.

Since it’s already January, waiting until March for the next set of labs wouldn’t be unreasonable. That way your new doctor will be able to add one more reading as an evaluation.

There are a number conditons which can lower platelets including autoimmune diseases, viral infections, medications or sometimes underlying health issues. A hematologist specializes in blood and blood disorders so it would be a reasonable suggestion for a referral, for your peace of mind, if nothing else.

Will you please let me know what you find out?
