Any suggestions on air purifiers?

Posted by staylorrn2000 @staylorrn2000, Jan 6 12:07pm

Hello. I have asthma with very reactive airways to chemicals, dust, mold, smoke. I’ve been doing research on air purifiers and the amount of literature is not only large but also is quite conflicting. Can anyone recommend a medical quality air purifier that will cover 1,000 sq ft? Has anyone had success with the Austin Air Healthmate Plus? Thanks!

@staylorrn2000 Like you, my lungs are very reactive. I use air filters recommended by my doctor.

You may want to read this discussion between myself and another member about HEPA air filtration and carbon. I discussed the type of filters I have and use from E. L. Foust.

I went with the top recommendation of Wirecutter here: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-air-purifier/

I have it in my living room/kitchen.

I also have this one in my bedroom: Alen BreatheSmart 45i Pure 4-Speed Ionic White HEPA Air Purifier ENERGY STAR (Covers: 1600-sq ft). Purchased it at Lowes as a quick fix when Drs thought I had ABPA (I don,t, turns out is it chronic eosinophilic pneumonia).

They recommend you change the filter every 6 months or when the indicator light goes on but we change ours every 6 weeks. If the filters are an indication, they are both working well because those filters are full of dust , etc every 6 weeks. They both work well but I like the kitchen one better as it's quieter. The one in my bedroom sounds like a jet at max speed! We have left both on 24/7 for 10 months and they are both still going strong.

Also bought a small Levoit for my office and that one isn't as effective. I wouldn't buy another one of this brand.

Hope this helps!

Be sure your duct work is clean. Had ours cleaned and now filters stay clean much longer.

Yes, its on our list for this year. We live in a historic home built in the 1920's. I love it (most of the time...) but there is a lot of dust that gets in!

Guys as you are suggesting to go with the recommendations of new york times, I did thorough research and read these recommendations and also other websites’ suggestions like consumer reports, popular mechanics etc and they are marking these two as best

i started a separate thread discussing the best air purifiers but didn’t come across anyone who has personally used the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH. Some users have praised Blueair for long term reliability but due to budget constraints and Coway’s sleek design, i am leaning toward purchasing the Coway Airmega.

If anyone has experience using the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, i would love to hear your thoughts. Would it be a good fit for a 400-square-foot room? Any insights on its performance for long-term use would be greatly appreciated.

I am very happy with IQAir. I have a lung disease and it is very involved (4 part filters) but I believe is worth the cost.

Had also bought a Blueair but had trouble with it.

I tried the Austin Air Healthmate Plus but the odor it gave off from being impregnated with Potassium Iodide (supposed to help eliminate VOCs for those of us who are very chemically sensitive), bothered my lungs within an hour of running it. I am now trying the regular Austin Air Healthmate (I’ve o ly had it an week) and so far I don’t really see much of a difference in the air quality of my condo. I will say, however, it doesn’t give off any odors.

Hello. May I ask which IQAir you have and also are you sensitive to VOCs such as formaldehyde?
