Hand pain
I was diagnosed with PMR sept of 24. Pain in neck arms shoulders hips buttocks. Started prednisone 15 mg. Feeling good about a month ago pain started in both hand. No where else. Past 4 days no hand pain and I’m afraid it’s going to strike somewhere else. Does PMR do that?

@nanniepie, You mentioned being diagnosed with PMR in Sept 2024 and started at 15 mg prednisone. That doesn't seem like that long ago for a PMR diagnosis. Other's have mentioned hand pain with PMR but for me it was mostly shoulders, arms and legs. You might want to look through the other discussions and comments from folks with PMR. What dose of prednisone are you on now? Have you done any activities that may have caused the hands to have some pain?
I also had hand pain prior to diagnosis of PMR. Mine was confined to my right hand and wrist, so bad I could not sign my name and would wear a wrist brace to ward off hand-shaking at church. Prednisone has definitely helped.
It can do that although it’s mainly shoulders, knees legs? But it’s a bit if a crazy condition traveling were it wants and when it wants. BUT, the good news it is not fatal and yes you can manage it, good luck and wishing you a pain free 2025 or at least a manageable condition that lets you continue to enjoy life.
I had really severe hand pain and extreme stiffness that started a few months after I was diagnosed and put on 20mg Prednisone. It was quite scary for a few months but as I reduced the Prednisone, the pain eventually and stiffness gradually settled. I'm left with a slight stiffness in both hands and can't open tight jar lids anymore (but that's what husbands are for, right !!)
The hand pain was what sent me to the doctor. At that time I felt like I could live with the other symptoms but I had to sit holding ice packs to deal with the hand pain.
Moving my hands a lot flexing and stretching and rubbing them seems to help. same with other achy joints. And yes sometimes it's only a few fingers, and then other times everywhere on both hands, and it gets better as the day goes on maybe because the prednisone is kicking in. Im down to 7mg, age 65 and I am 6 months into this experience.
@wfrolansky:
I had the same experience with morning hand and finger cramps and pains as I tapered below 10 at 1 per month to 5. An x-ray diagnosed mild osteoporosis which evidently had been successfully masked prior to PMR by my natural cortisol production. Somewhere around or below 5, it went away and has not returned. Now down to 1, having tapered at 0.5 per month. Only issue is occasional mild rotator cuff pain in one shoulder, which developed sometime around 3 or 4mg. Best of luck. Patience is required.
I had issues with hand and wrist pain after a couple of months of shoulder and glute pain. My right wrist is like a canary in a coal these days, pain starts there and is an indication that I need to pay more attention to my diet.
I’m not aware of diet influences can u help me?
Thank you.
