Nighttime Dry Mouth

Posted by kacey1 @kacey1, Oct 14, 2024

I'm a 79-year-old female with idiopathic dry mouth that has become progressively worse in the past two years. I go to bed at 11pm and will wake up every hour with dry mouth. When I wake up, I'll use either Act gum, sprays, water, or lozenges. By 5am, my mouth is so dry I have to get up and eat breakfast.
Tests for autoimmune diseases have been negative. Taking Pilocarpine gave me a headache.
Had anyone had success with products that work during the night?

I just wanted to add, though I have mixed connective tissue disease, my primary symptoms are sjogrens ( MIXED Connective tissue Disease can include sjogrens, lupus, and rheumatoid symptoms). That is what is helped by the plaquinil. I saw a top rheumatologist after my GP'S bloodwork showed high rheumatoid antibodies, and he nailed down my diagnosis and prescribed plaquinil.

I also have nighttime dry mouth and extreme burning lips. I just learned that some of it is due to the Sjogren’s , but some of it is due to new contact allergies. My immunologist conducted a patch test, and I learned that I’ve developed an allergic reaction to all beeswax products. As a result, some of the toothpastes, lip balm, lipsticks, and other oral products I was using had either beeswax or bee related products. I’m now going to be conducting a full food allergy test to see if that is also aggravating the situation? If you haven’t had a full set of patch test and allergy tests that may be an option to pin down what’s aggravating the issues? Now that I have stopped all bee related products, the severe burning lips and mouth dryness has improved a little bit. I’m told it can take up to six months for the response to improve.
I’ll be praying for you, as that feeling of waking up in the middle of the night in a desert - with your mouth feeling like it is full of dry sand is incredibly stressful and disruptive to your sleep.

Do you have An autoimmune diagnosis? You need to find the cause of the dry mouth. Meanwhile, keep hydrated and use biotene products: toothpaste, Dry mouth Spray. And mouthwash. They are highly recommended and help me. Many autoimmune illnesses have dry mouth as a symptom. I have mixed connective tissue disease . Plaquinil (hydroxychloroquine) has really helped the dry mouth. It's important for you to find out the cause and treat the symptoms. Dry mouth neglected can really screw up your teeth and gums .

I have no problem with dry mouth during the day, it's just over night that my mouth gets really dry. I keep water by my bed and that helps.

I have Sjogren's and a bunch of other auto immune issues. What works for me is using the Xylimelt lozenges. They last most of the night. If they are gone I will use another one or an ACT lozenge for the rest of the night.

@mef51 Are you ever concerned about aspirating the lozenge you have in your mouth? I got such a big lecture about it from the pharmacist yesterday!

Is your mouth dry at all during the day time?

I take the generic form of Evoxac in capsule form, one twice a day, and it makes me salivate like crazy. I need to put a wash cloth under my face at night because I drool all over the pillow. Sjögren’s had made my mouth so dry that if I don’t take antibiotics prior to dental cleanings I develop infections and have lost many teeth. (Saliva helps protect your teeth)

The Xylimelts stick to my gum/teeth all night. You are right to express concern about the lozenges. I have never had a problem with them as they seem to also stick to my gum/teeth. I have been replacing the lozenges lately with another Xylimelt if the first Xylimelt doesn't last the night. Another option would be the Biotene spray if the Xylimelts make the person uncomfortable.

I have the same issue. It’s only at night, and sometimes it’s so bad I feel like I’m choking. Lozenges do help, and so does water or a drink of any kind.

I use Allday dry mouth spray. I get it on Amazon. It’s better for me than Biotene spray.
