Vitamin D, supplements and anxiety & depression

Posted by yanks950 @yanks950, Dec 20, 2024

I am 36/m and have suffered from anxiety/depression for years. I have been on 90mg Duloxetine for approx 4 years and don’t remember the last anxiety problem. I dont get attacks. I get a random all day spike that then takes an unknown amount of time to come back down. I have really been struggling now for going on 2 weeks.

My Vitamin D is extremely low and have been told that could be causing this. Is this true? What are your experiences.

Itchyd An added thought...if you feel that your medical concern is from your parathyroid glands then the place you may consider calling and getting evaluated is the Norman Center. The only treat thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal gland issues. There are 8 doctors attending patients. I had one of my parathyroid glands removed there in 2022 on an out-patient procedure which took 16 minutes. When discharged I had in my discharge papers the cell phone #'s of all 8 doctors. I did have to call once and received a call back from my surgeon within 30 minutes. There is alot a paper work for the acceptance process, but also about an hour telephonic interview with your physician prior to your decision. An amazing place. I just couldn't find any physician locally that had the experience that these physicians had.

Haven’t been drinking caffeine since this started. As far as meditating idk how to do it or where to start. And I’ve never really believed in it in the past but maybe that because I never tried it. It’s hard to know where to start with any and all of this while your going through hell

For a start on meditation, (I’m new to it as well), I use YouTube videos. Type in “Guided Meditations”. There are several to choose from. Sometimes I will type in 20 minute guided meditations. There are many and of different lengths of time. They will guide you to relax using breathing, relaxation techniques and visualization. I personally enjoy “The Mindful Movement”. If you need further help, please let me know. Take good care.

Hey @yanks950, I really feel for what you're going through—and yes, low vitamin D can absolutely impact mood, anxiety, and brain function. You're not imagining it.

I've spent the last five years tracking my own vitamin D levels and how they connect to mood, energy, and memory. What stood out? When my levels dipped—especially in the winter—my sleep quality dropped, my focus got fuzzy, and emotionally, I felt... off. Not depressed in the classic sense, but like I was operating in low gear.

Vitamin D plays a role in serotonin production and interacts with brain areas responsible for mood and cognitive function. It also affects melatonin, which can throw off sleep—and we all know how that spirals into mental health.

From personal experience and research, here's what helped:

I found my personal sweet spot by testing seasonally. Too low, and I’d hit a wall. Too high, and I’d get edgy and sleep worse.

I now take a moderate dose consistently (not daily megadoses), with food that contains fat—it helps with absorption.

I also track how I feel each season, not just what labs say. Energy, sleep quality, and mood are big indicators.

You’re already on the right path by looking into it. Keep going. With the right support and tracking, things can really shift.
