Sugestion for good walking shoes for a 90-plus-year-old?

Posted by ciddy1931 @ciddy1931, Dec 26, 2024

Am reluctant to walk as much as I probably should. Am 93 and in good general health but quite fearful of possiblly falling. I feel that if I had a pair of sturdy walking shoes I would be inclined to walk much more. Any suggstions?

Hoka brand I have seen nurses, doctors and runners I know wear. Also, an 82-year-old i know.
I googled a site. The best walking shoes for seniors to keep you active and moving.

Walking poles can help too. Perhaps someone here can give some brand suggestions.

@ciddy1931 Hoka athletic shoes. They are expensive but highly recommended by my podiatrist. My Hoka shoes with my orthotics have been great for long walks and also relieve tension in my lower back.

Hoka! Great shoes. The Bondi is “chunky” but gives me a feeling of stability. I also wear the Clifton for a lighter feel. Keep on moving!!!

I think they may also be referred to as trekking poles.

The fear of falling can be the reason you don't move, but it can also be the motivator to get more strength in our limbs. Safety first is a great motto!
After coming through another health crisis, getting back on my feet is a huge challenge. Finding the right supportive shoe is key. I also was fitted for orthotics which gave wonderful support.
As my first step, I use my walker to re-commence my walking. My walker is a wonderful supportive tool.
When I have rebuilt some muscle and gain strength, the walker begins to feel like a hindrance, then I know it's time to graduate to my canes..... then one cane.
If you feel you need some direction in building this skill, maybe one session with a physiotherapist would be helpful.
When you go out walking, remember to take your phone. This always connects you to help if needed - or walk with a friend.
I would encourage you to use whatever tool gives you confidence in moving!
Well done you for setting this goal.

Tracks makes a very nice walking or hiking type stick. It is adjustable with spike for ice and wrist
loop. Have been using mine all over including the house to avoid falling for about 1 year. Jeff
