Can fibromyalgia affect your speech?
I am new to the diagnosis of fibromyalgia and have been trying to educate myself. Last week I went to the emergency room because I suddenly was lisping, had difficulty breathing, dizziness and elevated blood pressure. I have never lisped before but my mouth is not functioning as it usually has. It feels like my jaws are not aligning. I am not crazy, this really happened and is continuing. Nothing wrong dentally. But of course, the ER could not find anything wrong with me, and my primary care physician asked if I were depressed and seemed to indicate that I was malingering. So has anyone else had fibromyalgia affect their speech?

Stress can cause real issues. TMJ issues are real and a bite plate/night guard can significantly help with that. I did Invisalign 16 years ago and still wear a bite plate at night. If I miss a few nights I have jaw pain and or clicking and locking. I never had lisping but fibro fog and gabapentin can make it hard to put a sentence together quickly sometimes. I quit gabapentin a month ago even though it helped my pain. Too many side effects for me.
Yes, I find I have trouble with speech, searching for words, pronouncing words, putting a sentence together too. I have trouble remembering how to spell words too. I take a high dose of gabapentin but all this started before taking gabapentin. It gets much worse towards the end of the day or if I’m really tired.
I have found that when im tired, my speech/brain doesn’t work quite right. My two sisters also have a fibromyalgia diagnosis and this is true for them as well. I take Cymbalta, and so far my side effects are minimal. I take a CBD gummy and that has helped tremendously with pain. Its allows me to be more productive. Racing heart has popped up according to whatever other things are going on. You are not crazy! Unfortunately the medical community does not agree with the condition so you may find skeptical MDs. I wish you good luck with your symptoms and whatever treatments you may encounter.
I had to wear a mouth guard for a while. Because my stress was so bad. I was causing jaw pain, which was causing some speech problems. I just used an over-the-counter one suggested by my dentist, and it worked when the flare up was gone. I didn't need it. I'm keeping it handy.
@katman Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I know you’ve been lurking around all the discussions, but today is your first time posting. I hope you like what you’ve seen! Have you checked out the other discussions? How long have you had fibromyalgia?
About 25 years. On and off with the severity, I still haven't completely figured out what causes a flare up.
