Recently Diagnosed with Paralyzed Left Vocal Cord

I recently had surgery on C4 - C7 cervical vertebrae. A few weeks prior to the surgery, the Orthopedic Surgeon noticed an issue with my left vocal cord and got me into an ENT that specialized in throat. The ENT along with a speech pathologist put a scope down my nose and determine that I did have a paralyzed left vocal cord. The Orthopedic Surgeon deemed that anterior (going through front of neck) was too risky and opted to do the surgery posterior (through back of neck). This was in order to avoid an damaged to the right vocal cord. Much more painful and longer recovery. Having to wear hard neck brace for 6 weeks. Prior to determining the paralyzed left my voice voice had been getting hoarse and raspy. I don't know if spasm if the correct terminology, but I describe them as brief gasping for air. I used to get them infrequently if I layed on my back to long. Now since I have to sleep on my back for 6 weeks due to the cervical surgery and hard neck brace, I have these spasms much more frequently. I go back to see the ENT on 1/13/24 for some type of injection, something about it adding bulk to the paralyzed left vocal cord.

I too, ended up with a paralyzed vocal cord from surgery (mine was a complex heart surgery). I had to wait a year to see if it would re-engage and when it didn’t, I had an artificial chord put in. This is called a Thyroplasty. It has been very successful; my voice got better as did my breathing.
I hope everything works out for you.
