Psychotherapists who accept medicare??

Posted by fate @fate, Nov 16, 2021

I have searched for over a year for a therapist who accepts medicare. My long term therapist retired and left me without a referral. These "young" therapist want private pay it seems. Are we older folks thrown to the curb because we are not profitable? Community mental health only cater to addiction therapy. I feel bitter, angry and terribly saddened that mental health care is accessible only to the more wealthy.

This is my first time reading your post. I'm hoping that after 7 months, you have found a therapist and are establishing an effective working bond. I'm 67 and I think I can relate to you. In my lifetime, I've had several therapists who naturally "aged out."
My current therapist is 72 and semi-retired. I imagine that in a couple of years, I'll be searching for a new one...and I don't look forward to that "breaking-in" period...lol...smh

You might try your local university if it has a medical school. Also, contact your county agency for senior services.

hi all

i wish i could say i found someone taking medicare but have not. currently i am private paying for a psychiatrist to manage my meds. actually my son has helped me with the payments as it is about 350.00 an hour. fortunately he does half hour charges. i searched in my area for months. i have medicare with a supplement plan. no help from medicare or my supplemental insurance. my county will help me if i drop my supplement and apply for medi-cal. i can't do that as i have had cancer and don't want to lose the extended coverage. my therapist takes both but she can not prescribe. it's a mess. i am so close to stopping the psychiatrist because of the cost to me and my son.

If you qualify for Medicare services for home health they will set up your meds if you are unable. Some of the medicaps cover HH. They also have psych nurses as I am one.

Unfortunately, Medicare covers certain screenings, etc. But they often do not cover long term therapy.

I found information online that stated medicare does accept limited sessions per year. If memories serve me right, it was a low number like 5 sessions. Laughable!

Hello @fate, Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry it has been so difficult to find a therapist who accepts Medicare. Here is some information I found on Medicare.Gov that may be helpful.

"How do I find a therapist with Medicare?
Call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to get free personalized health insurance counseling. To get the phone number for your state, visit shiptacenter.org, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048."
Medicare Coverage of Therapy Services: https://www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/10988-Medicare-Limits-Therapy-Services.pdf

You can get the phone number for your state by visiting State Health Insurance Assistance Program - https://www.shiphelp.org/

Will you let us know if you find a therapist who accepts Medicare?

If I’m lucky to find someone who accepts Medicare they also want me to pay in addition to accepting Medicare. One mental health provider’s idea of a sliding scale was $120 a session so if I multiply that by four times a month I’m looking at almost $500 dollars from my disability checking $1000 a month. I’ve given up and already planning my suicide. It’s hopeless. America is hopeless. It’s a rich person’s playground. I’ve stockpiled up pills from when I could get a psychiatrist and im going to down it all at once. I’m only 50 but America doesn’t give a shit so why should I? I hope this country burns to the ground. I won’t be here to see it. You’ll be seeing mass suicides soon enough and the cold hearted fucks in America will enjoy it probably. They’ll say that it saves money. That’s all that American’s care about: money. Money is more important than people’s lives. That’s the sick nation America has become. I give up. Fuck America.

@iwanttodiebysuicide I can't tell from your post whether or not you are seeing a mental health therapist. Did you find a mental health provider who takes Medicare? I live in Michigan and here you would likely qualify for Medicare plus Medicaid. That would mean that Medicaid would fill in the gaps for you and there would be no payment for you

What do your family and friends say about your worries? What is your spiritual tradition and do you attend services? I am asking these questions because this is the community that keeps you connected with others and would greatly grieve if you were to die by suicide.

Would you please call the National Suicide and Crisis Line in the U.S. at 988?

@iwanttodiebysuicide I understand your feelings, I have felt like healthcare in this country has become less and less accessible. I am grateful that there are forums like this one where we can access some support from other people going through the same kinds of things.
Please if you are not feeling safe right now, call 988. You can also go the nearest ER, or if you are a vet, any VA center.
I agree with @esikora , don’t let outside forces destroy you. Don’t let them beat you down. Going out willingly feels like agreeing that you aren’t worthy because you aren’t rich. I just can’t believe that is true, you are worthy of life, worthy of happiness, worthy of peace.

I have been where you are and still struggle at times, but at one point I voluntarily went to the hospital and was admitted. They got me back on track and their social worker got me connected with resources that got me help at a lower cost. I strongly recommend that you go to the nearest hospital's emergency room and tell them.
