Can gabapentin cause muscle pain and cramps in arms & legs?

Posted by sadeyes @sadeyes, Jan 28, 2020

Has anyone ever had the experience of Gabapentin causing severe muscle cramps in arms and legs and muscular pain and feeling of weakness? I know it is supposed to basically do the opposite and help with muscular problems......but this has happened twice to me as soon as I started the gaba and it was very severe,

Believe so. However check with your Pharmacist.

Thank you for all this info. I just started on Gabapentin a month or so ago. I had taken it before but stopped because of how it made me feel. I just felt so loopy all the time. I have arthritis and neuropathy and my doctor again wanted me on Gaba. This time I am having severe leg and foot pain like many of you. I suspected the Gaba was causing the pain that I was having during the night and decided today to stop taking it. I am only on 300 mg and tonight will be the first time without it for a month. I will have to let you know if my pain stops in a few days. Merry Christmas everyone!

I have taken this with affects that we're both good and bad. I liked that it relaxed my bladder and nerves in that area but it affected my legs to where I was having more problems walking . Like off balance and not knowing when one leg would just buckle. I take it every other day but not daily , I have found it works for me that way. Some days I forget and not take it for more than 3-4 days but it does help me. Besides the weakness of my lower extremities.
You may want to try this , sometimes we absolutely know our bodies better than anyone.
Hope this helps.
Sherry.

Doctor's don't understand the topic & generally not interested in learning, or reading. They don't know what to prescribe & prescribe the wrong drugs as such. I'm no loner trying to be a guinea pig for ignorant docs. Since i was an RN for 40 years, i do my own research & not willing to try most suggestions ( have read about nasty side affects) This an awful disease & lack of treating doctors, makes it that much worse. Have found that neurologists may treat it. I try to be positive, but it's very difficult, especially since serious symptoms change frequently

After about a week and a half on a low dose of gabapentin I started to have problems with my knees and legs so I stopped taking it immediately.

I had terrible side effects with GABA. Caused swelling and edema in my knees and elbows - terrible mood swings etc. Went off it after 2 months. Had to nitrate down to avoid withdrawals.

I was started on 75mg of gabapentin for sciatica, which at the time stopped the sharp pain shooting down my legs. Since then, I have had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at me from a lung transplant, neuropathy and drug induced diabetes. I have found I have good and bad days and never suspected gabapentin which I am now up to 100mg twice daily. Even after taking it and laying down I have sharp electrical jolts of pain shoot down my left leg which was the worst affected regarding neuropathy. I looked at the common use and was left wondering why it was prescribed in the first place. I am also suffering from swelling in my feet and legs. What are the options?

Have you tried taking a teaspoonful of prepared mustard?

I take gabapentin 300 mg 3 times a day. I find I have cramps because I don't drink enough water.
I sleep with a heating pad under my calves at night and I'm fine.

@cbthomasga9 it’s the mustard you use on your hamburger and hot dog. The smooth, yellow kind.
