International Travel after Liver Transplant

Posted by hahanoi @hahanoi, Dec 9, 2024

Hello everyone,

I recently got liver transplant in April 2024. I would like to travel abroad to visit my family outside of the US. I will be at 10 months post transplant. Is there anybody travel abroad after the transplant. If yes, at what months after the transplant? I would be greatly appreciate it if you share what Dos and Don'ts.
Thank you so much!

I just talked with mayo. I'm going to Mexico. They said I need to see the travel clinic/department. I just made my appt. They do pre appointment phone interview 14 days before appt and want to see you no later than 4 weeks before travel date. They review all immunization and areas of disease relevant to regions traveling.

Am learning a lot here. Am 3 months post kidney transplant and planning a trip home to England in June. Am I being too optimistic?

Hi,@maggieinfp. Congratulations on your recent Kidney transplant.
I think it is exciting that you are planning a trip home to England in 2025!
I'm not sure that that it is possible to be "too optimistic", after all you have prepared and received your kidney transplant in order to live a normal life again. I'm so appreciative of the our transplant members who have already shared and provided you with their transplant travel tips.

Maggie, I would encourage you to share your plans with your transplant team. I don't think it is too early, and they will likely have suggestions for you based on your transplant progress, as well as helpful advice so that you can begin to plan.
When do you see them again?

I keep seeing posts about infectious disease appointments- I have my one year postop appointment in February at the Mayo and am going to Italy and Barcelona in August - should I also see infectious disease prior to my trip or can my team give me meds and advice? Thanks

@jar1279171 at my last in person appointment at Mayo I asked about international travel and getting a med pack and/or special vaccines and my transplant nurse put in an order for me to see international travel. The catch is that it has to be in person. So I will see them in January when I return to Mayo in advance of my April trip.
I encourage you to send a message in the Mayo portal and request a visit with them, if you are a Mayo patient.

My understanding is that the doctors usually want you to wait at least 6 to 12 months. But you should check with your transplant team for guidelines and advice for your own particular situation since individual situations vary from person to person,
