Ever since I started on Xeralto, blood thinner, and Valsartan, my polycystic liver has been giving me pain. My blood tests for liver health are abnormal. My nephrologist says she will refer me to a liver specialist after watching for another 3 months. I read online the side effects of the two medications I take is liver damage. Both my cardiologist as well as my nephrologist insist I need to stay on these meds for the rest of my life. Xeralto prevents a stroke and Valsartan keeps my blood pressure down. Am I to just accept this fact about my liver damage and go on with life and be grateful the drugs are helping me in general? I am 69 so I guess I can consider myself fortunate I do not need a kidney or liver transplant in the near future. Just looking for someone that can relate to what I am going through.

Hi, @kidneybean1. I am a liver and kidney recipient, not due to PKD or PLD. I will be taking antirejection medications for the rest of my life, and have done so for the past 15 years since my transplant. I am currently monitored with blood labs every 3 months, and that is how often I was monitored before my transplant. So. I am guessing (as a patient) that 3 months is a typical guideline for checking labs. I also know that pain can be a sign of infection, and that is my concern for you.
Have you been taking Xeralto and Valsartan for a period of time or are these new prescriptions for you? Sometimes, a new medication can affect the liver levels in a blood test. Have they discussed that as a possibility?
