Falling for no apparent reason: Any ideas?
I'm 75, active, female, and constantly falling for seemingly no reason. I just fall! Three times already this week. In one fall, I split my ear and required 8 stitches. No dizziness, etc.
I need falling prevention classes in Seacoast NH. I am getting very worried that one of these falls will result in serious injury. Perhaps I need some kind of testing. Tomorrow, I'm going to an ENT doctor who was referred to me by a doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic who said my ear was infected. The ENT receptionist said maybe he'll refer me to an audiologist or optometrist to do balance, inner ear testing, etc. Does that sound about right to anybody who knows what I'm talking about. Remember, no lightheadedness or dizziness, etc. I take several medications for depression, anxiety, cholesterol, etc, but my mind does not feel foggy or cloudy.
Please help me find an appropriate doctor specializing in this issue. Or a suitable class or program. I am getting scared now. It happens too much. I only was really hurt once so far when I split my ear when I fell, but I know it can happen any time now and maybe disable me, or worse.
Please help me. I'll be here to see any posts all day today and am free to answer any questions you may have.

sometimes it's because I forgot to eat. sometimes it's a medicine. sometimes it's because I am moving too fast. my son installed a sturdy handrail and a handle strategically placed. I am terrified of stairs.
How does one find a good neurologist who understands balance issues? Does one have to call every office to ask?
Can anyone recommend someone in the Austin area? There are SO many.
Thank you.
I am feeling much better since following "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" book by Joel Wallach & Ma Lan. Bought the 8th edition on e-Bay for about $20.
I had balance issues and frequent falling that ended up being due to thoracic ligaments pressing on my spinal cord at the T111. ( spinal myelopathy). It was corrected with a spinal laminectomy. If your current specialist visits reveals no apparent cause see an orthopedic spinal doctor or a neurosurgeon.
I have what is called a primary care dr. she will recommend specialists, do you? I would go through the primary care dr if I were you.
bring a list of what you might need to remember to go over with a primary care dr.
My issues with balance are corrected. I do have a primary care doc but I self referred to ortho spine doctors and neurosurgeons. They often don’t require a referral. A MRI is necessary to determine spinal issues. Just offering a suggestion that primary care doc might not think of.
I'd run it by the primary care dr. first, ergo list
Seeing an ENT, and being tested, would be my recommendation. Should they not find a reason for the falling ( perhaps related to inner ear problems ), then I would recommend seeing a neurologist, preferably a movement disorders specialist! I fall frequently because of diagnosed Parkinson’s Disease! My neurologist signed me up for physical therapy, that has specific balance exercises! I did well in physical therapy training, and the exercises helped a great deal! Good luck and stay safe! 😀
I also fell suddenly…into a rose bush. It felt like I “missed a beat” when I tried moving my foot to walk. Not a stumble or trip…My Internist recommended a Neurologist, who performed an EMG. Sure enough, it found I had first stages of Idiopathic Polyneuropathy. That was 15 years ago. I had no warning or symptoms before this fall! My brain sent out normal messaging but the nerves never received them. Over time this condition has worsened but awareness and prevention (cane or walker) are the key. Physical therapy helps immensely. Dr. Has me on Gabapentin daily but drugs do not help the issue. Good luck.
